Hi,
Since I was 14, I've had a few varicose veins. I've been told they are superficial and don't need treatment, but they are ugly and I used to be quite self conscious about them. While they bother me less now (who's looking at my legs anyway, right?), I know they run in my family and that pregnancy can make you develop more of them, which I'd, of course, like to avoid.
My doctor suggested getting over the counter support stockings. I've tried looking online and at Walgreens but am at a total loss as to what to look for! There are all sorts of different levels of compression and brands.
I'm wondering if anyone has experience with them. Any brands or retailers you'd suggest? Do you wear them everyday or just in certain situations? Anything else I should consider. Oh, and I need the thigh high ones because some of my worse veins now are behind my knees.
Thanks!
Re: varicose veins and support stockings
There are different levels of compression- mild, moderate and firm. There are some that are thigh highs and some that are knee highs. They have open toed stockings and closed toe (like regular pantyhose). I think that a pp is right that there are some that basically look like pantyhose that are made for pregnant women.
Varicose veins run in my family and I have leg pain late in the day. I started wearing some firm compression stockings in the late afternoon/early evening. I am not wearing them to work and don't have to worry about how they look with skirts or under pants. The brands I have are not very sheer. I have a pair of mild support that is Jobst brand and a firm compression pair that is Futuro. Both are only knee highs. They are both fine. The firm compression feels really nice after a long day. HTH.
