What to do with dog during L&D?

So we have a 1 year rambunctious German Shepherd and obviously she has to do something while we're gone at the birth center... but we don't know what the heck to do with her!

(1) She isn't fond of strangers i.e. our neighbors

(2) Most of our friends live 2+ hours away or leave during the summer (college town) so there isn't anyone really close by that could take care of her

(3) My MIL wants to be at the birth center in the waiting room so she won't be at the house to let puppy out

(4) Thought about boarding her, but possibility of going into labor + trying to get dog to kennel + kennel needs to be open + need to pick dog up = kinda complicated

Any suggestions??? She is crate trained, but I would hate to leave her in there if L&D happens to go on forever...Maybe MIL should come home and take her out? IDK---Help!

  • I would just have your MIL take her out, you will probably know when the baby is about to be born (dialating faster etc) so as long as you arent a really long way from the hospital she should be able to let the dog out if needed.

  • our dog is going to the kennel. if we go into labor at night, DH will send someone to get him and take him over the next day or at least walk him until he can run home and drive the dog to the kennel. i might end up with a repeat c-section if unable to vbac so we could be looking at 4 days away.
  • We're about 45 min - 1 hour away from our house

  • Look into finding a dog walker in your area.  They can come and meet your dog before hand and get familiar with it then you call call when you go into labor.

  • Seems unnecessary for your MIL to be in the waiting room the ENTIRE time you are in labor - that could be a very long time.  I would ask her to let the dog out when you are say, halfway through (or halfway dilated or something).
  • Yea we have had to figure this one out too because our dog is not big on people he doesn't know plus the kennel is expensive. So since we have a fenced in yard and our dog loves being outside we put in a doggy door for him to get used to so that we can leave him at home. He has separation anxiety so we wanted him to get used to it in advance and he's doing great! We are just having DH's mom come over to feed him. Plus the hospital is only 45 min from the house so I can have DH go home at one point to see him and bring LO's blanket or hat for the dog to smell and get used to before LO gets home.

  • My mom is coming to my house and picking up my 3 yr old beagle and he will be staying there while we are at the hospital.  once the baby is born, she will crate him for a bit at her house and come visit then.

  • We are REALLY lucky in that the hospital I'll be delivering at is only 5 minutes away from my house. Either DH or MIL will be running back to the house at some point to let the dog out to pee.

  • If you do not live far from the hospital just have MIL run home to let her out.

Our plan is for my Dad to come pick up my dogs for them to stay at my parents while we are in the hospital since my Dad won't be showing up to wait in the waiting room for the whole labor and most likely will just come to the hospital once LO is born or very shortly before..

    this.

  • I may be completely delusional, but our plan is for DH to come home and let the dogs out.  We have to big 'uns and we're only about 15 minutes away at the hosp.

Figure that we'll be in labor in the hosp for a while, but not longer than 12 hours or so, without him being able to leave for an hour tops.  Then, after we deliver DH will have to go out and get me good food, so that will be a time for him to come home, let the dogs out, shower, etc.

I know he will want to be with me every minute, but 2 - 2-1/2 days in the hosp is too long for him to stay there just sitting on the couch.  Now, if anything happens where he has to stay - we'll board them as soon as we get the chance.

    This.

Or have MIL take her to the kennel.

  • All the answers that I can come up with involve strangers (there's usually at least one good dog walker in every college town) so I don't think you have many other choices than to get MIL to make runs back to the house for the dog.

I wouldn't do the crate because with everything else going on during L&D, you don't want to be mentally adding up crate hours and worrying that it's been too long.

As for me, my mom is three hours away and I'm sure will jump in the car as soon as I call to let her know that I'm going to the hospital so she'll be around to make runs back to the house to left the dog out. It's about 20 minutes each way, but it really is the best option. The neighbor we're friendliest with is a great grandmother and I wouldn't want the dog to get excited and bump her or anything if she came to let her out. Her son (who is also our neighbor - yay country living) has helped us so much with little things that I'd really hate to ask him. My dad isn't coming down until later because he has to stay home with their own four dogs.

I'd look into an in home pet sitting service/dog walker.  You could maybe have them come a few times to do walks beforehand so your dog gets used to them.  That way you don't have to worry about pick up or anything that comes along with a kennel, the dog will be home when you get home.

  • I'm thinking I read that the avg first labor is 16 hours....so, depending on how early you go to the birthing center, you could be there awhile. Maybe have MIL let them out on her way to the center....

This is one of the reasons why we don't have dogs, even though I love them.
