DD needed her 9 month bloodwork, so I made an appt at the lab and went this morning. I thought it was a heel prick, and was surprised when the woman at the front desk asked if I was nervous... no, why?
So we get in and they tell me to take her sweater off. And then she showed me the vial she had to take from her arm. I was not expecting that. I sat down holding her, and they tested both arms, then put the needle in her left, but lost the vein. So one tech was digging around, couldn't find it, then the second tech tried. Meanwhile DD is freaking out, screaming, sweating, crying, and finally I told them Enough!!!! I was so upset.
So then they tried the other arm, but before the started, the first tech was coughing and gasping for air, and said she needed her inhaler but had a few minutes until it got bad. Are you f'ing kidding me???? The other tech told her to go, and she said no, so I yelled at her to go take care of herself, and that she shouldn't be trying to get DD's blood when she's in danger of having a major asthma attack.
Finally they got the needle in the right arm, got the blood they needed, but it was just an awful experience. DD was a mess, I was crying at this point, and the tech with the asthma just left the room. The other tech kept apologizing. DD screamed the entire 15 minute drive to daycare, and has some bruising on the first arm.
I am just beside myself, angry, upset, and don't know what to do. Today was their last day at that location, so I don't even know who I'd call, and what it would do. I cannot even describe the anger I felt watching them try to do that to DD. What would you do??? DH said they are lucky he wasn't there. He probably would have hurt someone.
Re: Awful experience at the lab with DD today
OMG, I'm so sorry! You should completely file a complaint.
I don't know why labs, people who take blood for a living, so frequently can't find a vein. I remember my 3 hr glucose test left me with way more than 3 holes in my arm and a ridiculous amount of bruising.
Honestly there is no reason to complain. It is very difficult to get blood from a wiggly 9 month old - regardless of skill level.
That being said - if you are mad at anyone - be mad at your Pedi who ordered the bloodwork. Not routinely done by all Pedis.

I understand that it's a hard thing to do, and yes, I will take this up with my pedi, too . But the way they were treating her like a doll, 2 people DIGGING around in her arm for a few minutes, and then having a freaking asthma attack, coughing, and gasping for air which is risking something happening WHILE trying to stick a needle in her wriggly little 9 mo old arm? That is unacceptable IMO.
