how do naptimes go at your house?

Here's how mine used to go: paci, swaddle, crib, OUT.

Here's how they go now: i put him in the crib with the paci, he spits it out. we don't swaddle anymore because he fights his way out, plus it's way too warm. then he just cries and cries and fights it as much as possible. i'm so frustrated, i don't know what to do. any suggestions?

Re: how do naptimes go at your house?

  • It really depends on R. One nap, we can nurse, swaddle, paci, and he's out without a fight and within 5 minutes. His next nap, we can do the same and he'll scream for 10+ minutes and fight me until he's passed out. Others, he doesn't want to be held but wants to be put in his RnP and be rocked to sleep (not sure what we're gonna do when he outgrows it... I have no suggestions, I can just commiserate because R is a world champion sleep fighter lol.

  • She rubs her eyes, I bring her to her crib, pop in the paci and leave the room. She'll talk to herself for a few minutes.. sometimes I have to go in and hold the paci in place for a minute, then she starts sucking and falls asleep.

  • griffin also used to be swaddle, paci, crib.  now he freaking fights sleep.  hes fussy, crying, screaming, punching, scratching, kicking and doesnt want to be put down.  so we hold/rock him while he flails around which lasts from 5-15 min and then he gets kinda drowsy so we swaddle him.  then for naps we'll put him in the swing (hes too long for it so he bends his legs =S) and at night he sleeps in his crib.  this fussiness has only been going on a few days but i dont know how much longer i can take.  fvck the 4 month wakeful.
  • nurse to sleep... I really wish it wasn't this way, but I don't know how else to get her to sleep.  :(

basically this - unless he falls asleep on the play mat, then he just stays there :)

  • After about 2 hours of being awake (or when he looks tired), we go to his room, change diaper, read some books, turn on sleep sheep and sea horse, put the paci in, put him on his tummy in the crib and leave. Sometimes (rarely) that's it and I don't hear from him for 1 1/2 hours. Other times, he'll start to cry and lose the paci. Then I HAVE to go back in and replace the paci or else he won't go to sleep. Sometimes he'll fight it and spit it out, kick his feet, yell or 10 minutes; other times it just takes me going in once to replace the paci and he's out.

  • I lay her in the crib, turn on the mobile.  She will watch her guys for a few, possibly fuss & then fall asleep.  Or I put her in the swing, turn on the music & lights, give her her bug toy & she'll eventually pass out when she's done playing. She sleeps anywhere from 20 mins to 3.5 hours.

Hmm, I made that sound really easy - but it's NOT!  I watch the clock (usually 2-2 1/2 hours awake time) and her sleepy cues.  If she's over-tired, she will NOT go to sleep without a major fight.  She can stay awake for a 45 minute car ride!  So, I try not to let her get over tired.

  • His morning nap is our easiest- he'll either 1) fall asleep on the way to taking DS1 to preschool, sleep through the dropoff and ride home, then nap in his carseat or 2) (on weekends or if DH is home) I'll change him, nurse him, and place him in the bassinet once he starts zoning out.

Every other nap of the day, he fights sleep if he's not held for atleast a few minutes after falling asleep. Car rides put him out every time so I have been trying not to mess up his schedule too much by driving at times that will throw off his whole day. (Such as when we go to my parents or IL's straight from picking up DS1 from preschool. Normally he'd wake up shortly after getting home but that turns it into either a 45 min or 1.5 hour nap inbetween his regular naptimes)
  • Haha.. Naptimes are a joke over here.  He has the 4 month wakeful so bad I could sob.  It used to be rock for 5 minutes, he falls asleep, I put him down, he sleeps 45 min to 3 hrs depending on which nap it is.  (used to be 2 45's then a 2-3 hr one in the afternoon)  Now it is rock with him for 20-25 minutes while he screams, fights, tries to rip my face off and throw himself off my lap.  He falls asleep, I put him down and he wakes up 23 minutes later.  Yesterday he literally had five 23 minute naps all day.  Today I took him for a 2 hour long walk and when we got home he took a 2 hour nap but that was a fight too because I put him down after 6 minutes of sleeping and he woke right up and then cried on and off for 25 minutes in his crib before falling asleep again.  I bought Healthy Sleep Habits today and I am scouring it because this SUCKS A$$!  So no advice, but lots of commiseration!

  • oliver is a sleep fighter for sure.  no matter how soon i get him down he kicks and screams.  he will wake up at 30 min, 40 min. and 50 minutes.  if im holding him i have a chance to soothe him back to sleep, but if not...forget it.  its depressing. do they grow out of this or do we have to let them cry for hours weeks on end?  because im pretty sure thats how long it would take.
