protein in urine

Had an OB appt earlier today and all went well except slightly elevated levels of protein in my urine. The Dr said that since I was not having any other symptoms like blurred vision, cramps, swelling, and my blood pressure was normal, it was okay. He didn't really explain what caused this and what, if anything, I should do. I've looked it up online and seen it could be a sign of preeclamsia, which scares me.

Anyone else had this? How do I make the protein level drop or is it even possible? What causes this? Is it something I can control? Will it lead to more problems?

Thanks in advance

  • You might want to look it up on WebMD or something similar.

  • For me and some other ladies on this board protein in urine was related to elevated blood pressure.  I'm not sure why you're doctor didn't go into further detail with you about but I'm guessing because the amount of protein in your urine wasn't high enough to raise any major concerns.  Also without elevated blood pressure, swelling or blurring of vision it may not be an indicator of pre-eclampsia or pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH).  If you're really concerned I'd call your doctor and ask more questions about it.  Good luck.

  • There are a few different reasons that could be happening.  During pregnancy, it is usually a symptom preeclampsia, but isn't always preeclampsia.  Don't worry if your blood pressure is normal.  The blood pressure is more of a concern than the protein.  If you start to get any of the other symptoms, call them right away.  Drink plenty of water (dehydration can cause the protein in your urine).  Also, take things easy.  Don't put too much stress on your body and rest as much as you can.

Even if it is preeclampsia, as long as your doctor is monitoring you, everything should be okay.  I had preeclampsia with DS and everything was fine.  DS was born healthy and happy right on time.  My niece was born at 34 weeks due to preeclampsia and is doing just fine, as is my step-sister.

This, I developed preeclampsia last time, and still had a healthy baby girl.  But my blood pressure was way up before my urine was showing raised protien.

This happened to my friend (also a July 2011 mama). Her doctor explained that since she had no other symptoms of pre-eclampsia (like the high BP) that it was most likely dehydration, and that they would check again at her next appointment. She started to drink lots of water and now is doing fine (no protein in the urine).

  • This happened to me @ my last appt too but it was just protein and the nurse told me to drink more water. I drank lots after the appt and had it checked again (I work at a clinic) in a few days and there was no protein. You could just be dehydrated, especially if your Dr. didn't seem too concerned.

  • I had protein and an elevated bp, so I had to do a 24 hour urine test.  My 24 hour test was normal, so my doctor suggested I drink even more water. It can be an indicator of preeclampsia but it doesn't sound as though your doctor is concerned about this. I would call and ask some follow up questions.
