I've been going back and forth on this for some time, can't decide I want, neither can DH. What are people getting...and why? Audio only or video? Brand? 2nd time plus moms...your opinions?

We decided to do video so we could check on her without opening the door and waking her up (especially when she's a little older and fussing just so she doesn't have to go to sleep, not because she needs something)
We got the Lorex video monitor. It's a good price, digital/secure, and for the most part the reviews seem pretty good.
We got a video this time around and I like it much better than the regular one we had with Jacob. We will be getting a second camera when James arrives for his room.

Hopefully it works well. I like that you can talk to your baby without going into their room and you can take pictures if they are doing something really cute in their crib.
We couldn't decide on a monitor and being in a small apartment we figured we wouldn't really need one. However at our baby shower we recieve the angelcare monitor which has the pad for under the mattress and beeps if they do not breath or move within 3mins and then continues every additional minute and makes a loud alarm in 5 minutes if there has been no response. it also plays sound to the carry around with you monitor which you can change to sound, sound and motion, or just motion. I do like that the one that sits in the room tells you the current temp and has a nightlight
these angelcare ones are not cheap though

We registered for the Sony BabyCall with 2 monitors. It's audio only. We have a multi-level split house so our bedroom and living room are feet away from the baby's room so we didn't see the need for the video monitor.
We got the Tomy walkabout classic. it has 2 way communication so you can talk to baby without enterring the room. it flashes on the parent end so you can "see" if baby sturs it has a built in night light that you can control from the parent unit and it can go portable or run on mains with a 300 meter range. This is my 3rd baby and this monitor has everything we need and more. you learn to know your babys cries and noises pretty quick and can tell what they want or need just by the sound they make no vidio required and ive heard that the angle care monitor can be a little crazy and dont always pick up movement so alarms start going of setting any parent on edge all the time (iv never owned one so not sure how accurate this is) A friend of mine had one and stopped useing it because of this.
We got a Summer Infant Slim and Secure video monitor. I was unsure if we'd need one with video but after watching my 1 1/2 yr old niece a few times, I was sold. She, like many babies, made lots of noise when she was sleeping and having a video monitor to see if she really needed something or was just fussy was helpful. My SIL said she thinks it really helped her to learn to self-soothe since they weren't checking in every time she made noise. The quality is excellent but the price was pretty steep.

We originally registered for a video monitor, but they all got bad reviews. So, after a lot of looking an researching, we decided on the Angelcare motion detection monitor. This one has had LOTS of reviews that said it saved the baby's life! It's a motion pad that goes under the mattress and an alarm goes off if the baby stops moving (i.e. breathing). The only bad reviews were some false alarms like the baby moved off the sensor area and an alarm went off. Well, I'd rather have a false alarm then no alarm at all and something happens to LO.

Angel Care Monitor with breathing pad - it alerts you if baby isn't breathing... that is more important to me than seeing baby on video.
the monitor also tells you the room temperature which is a great feature because warm temperatures can lead to an increased risk of SIDS.
Highly suggest this monitor!

We'll probably get something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Sony-Baby-Call-Nursery-Monitor/dp/B000S35QLC/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I22FMNR61C5RLL&colid=2GW9OHQ6XEZYR
Simple, effective, budget friendly.
However, I'd like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Summer-Infant-Handheld-Monitor-Screen/dp/B0007OD8SU/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2DWW1V1439JY5&colid=3E8I6SD9HCOVV
I think it would be nice to check on her when she gets older without opening the door. But its pricey. We'll see.
