When to buy nursing bras?

Have any of you bought these yet? I want to be prepared in case LO comes early, but I also want to make sure that I buy the right size. Ideas/advice? TIA! :)

Re: When to buy nursing bras?

  • Great question.  Was just thinking about this yesterday while in Motherhood Maternity.

  • I'm not exactly sure when your supposed to, but I bought mine last time at 34 weeks. Several others on here have mentioned waiting til milk comes in since you not know which size you'll be. But youre going to need at least one for the hospital, so if you're not comfortable guessing sizes then I'd buy em and leave the tags on all but the one for the hospital. I got lucky going a size up. They fit fine.

  • FTM here, but I asked a friend the other day.  She said after 36 weeks.  Check to see if you have any local shops, ours will fit you and guarantee that the bra will fit when your milk comes in, if it doesn't they'll exchange it even if you've worn it. I plan on getting 1 or 2 there to start, then picking up more after LO arrives.

  • I'm a FTM but I planned to hold off until my LO is here. Someone on this board (I forget who it was) said that your bra size will change drastically once your milk comes in so hold off until after the birth.

I think I may get one so I at least have something to wear at the hospital! And then I will probably send my mom or DH to the store to buy me some after LO arrives.

  • Yeah I bought some a whiiile back. So glad I did because they're much more comfortable than my pre pregnancy bras were. A couple of them are starting not to fit (but since they weren't terribly expensive I'm not upset about this). The other two I was between sizes and bought the bigger so they're still loose (but comfy) and I hope they'll be perfect size once milk comes in. Since I already have a few I'll wait til after LO is here to buy more.

Edit: I didn't go out seeking "nursing" bras, it just happened that the maternity bras that were most comfortable to me were nursing ones.

  • I've been wearing them since weeks 15 or so (I think). I needed new bras and these were the most comfortable and the same price as the other bras. I wasn't looking for a 'wahoo' bra, more like 'aaahhhh' bra since my boobs were super sore when they had their growth spurt.

I plan on getting some nursing tank tops and if needed at the time new nursing bras after baby comes so I know at that time what size I'll need and what will be most comfortable for all involved.

  • With my first I waited until AFTER the baby was born and a few days later so my milk could come in. I bought them at our hospitals "nursing store" they measured me and everything. They are the ones that told me to wait a few days because my size would change when my milk came in. Im glad I waited.

  • I've been wearing nursing bras since the beginning of 2nd tri. I bought them at Motherhood Maternity. Pricey, but ssssooooo comfortable. I bought one in black and another in nude. I only wear these bras. I figured that since I was going to splurge on two bras, I might as well buy nursing ones.

  • After the baby is here, seriously.  I bought one from the LC at the hospital because the 2 cheap Target ones I bought at 38 weeks were about 2 sizes too small.
