Stuff to have at home after baby?

For all I know there are already 25 posts about this, but I haven't seen them... so I'll rehash this, especially as we have so many new mamas to give their input.

So here's what I have so far:

Baby necessities- diapers/wipes/bottles and pump (and I have some formula that came as a sample as a backup, just in case).

Frozen Meals (if you're going that route)

Breast Pads

Pads with good coverage/absorbancy (I'm concerned the hospital pads are going to be huge)

tylenol and ibuprofen

Any other thoughts?  I know I can always send someone out, or I can go out and get stuff, but I like to be prepared when I can.

(and I'm trying to avoid cleaning right now...)

Re: Stuff to have at home after baby?

  • Lansinoh Ointment or whatever it's called.  I haven't had to use it too much, yet but it's helped when I needed it.

And I know every hospital is different but I really liked their mesh undies because they went above my c-section incision.  I took home what I had left and now I'm out... and seriously miss them.  All my undies are bikini cut and hit me just above my scar and sometimes it can bother it. This is something that you could wait to get until after you come home but it might be nice to have a couple "granny panties" waiting for you and have your H or someone else buy you more if you need.

  • PP were good. I agree you'll want the hospital pads!! I actually asked for extra before we left because the big huge bulky ones were the best!!

I would also say have more sleeping/nursing bras than you think you will need. I end up with milk on mine so after wearing it once, maybe twice, it needs to be washed. I only had three when we came home, so I was doing laundry every day just to keep up. Also DO NOT buy nursing bras with underwire if you plan on pumping or BF. I know everyone is different, but LC told me this and I just kind of blew it off, and by day 3 I was cursing my underwire and never wanted to see an underwire bra again.

Have refills for your diaper pal. We've had Katherine home 6 days and DH had to change it today.

Even if you have freezer meals, have snacks. Crackers, cheese, sandwhich stuff,  hot pockets, chips, fruit, veggies you can eat raw...etc. Even though we have freezer meals I still don't have the energy/time some days to cook. Tonight I do and I'm making porkloin with potatoes!! Monday- Wednesday I ate a turkey sandwhich while sitting on the edge of the bed pumping.

Pay all your bills! Being the first of the month ( I get paid once a month) I need to remind myself to do this. Between feeding DD, pumping, washing pumping parts, trying to shower and get laundry and dishes done, it's miracle I remembered to do this!

That's all I can think of right now! Good Luck!

That's a good one-  we're renting our house in Raleigh and the mortgage auto drafts but in our rental here I have to remember to send the landlord a check and I always forget till the last day of the month.... maybe I'll go ahead and pay April and May at the same time.

  • What I use most these days?:

    Burp clothes
Swaddling blankets - aiden&anais - great size and soft
Pump, steamer sanitizer bag, 1000 milk storage containers (I have an oversupply)
A million diapers and wipes - I swear this child poops 24 times a day
    White noise machine
    PNP changing table pads
    Tylenol
Charmin Freshwipes - after a vag delivery even toliet paper hurts!
Lots and lots of drinks - water, OJ, juice...I'm always thirsty (Bfing side effect?)
Every carryout menu within a 3 mile radius
Extra soothies pacis, if you're going to use them

From the hospital we got pleanty of formula to get us through until milk came in; I loved and miss the mesh undies and wish I had more; the hospital pads are great - and come in two sizes, mega and medium - wish I took more medium home.

That's basically it - we sleep, eat, poop.

This is a pretty good list but you have to think of things to have on hand for yourself as well.  You already mentioned tylenol and ibuprofen but remember that after having anesthesia and/or pain meds at the hospital you might be really constipated.  So, you might also want to have stool softener (pills, powder, etc) on hand just in case you need it.  That seems to be a big complaint post-labor.  Just a thought...

  • Wow, you ladies are good!  I didn't even think to ask, but I appreciate the ideas!
  • I have also heard that we will want Tucks pads. = )
  • I've stocked up on non-baby essentials as well: toilet paper, dishwasher soap, garbage bags, free and clear laundry soap, cat litter, cat food, etc.

Lots of easy food, both freezer and not. Cheese strings, trail mix, cereal. I've got lots of oatmeal, raisins, and walnuts as that's what I like for breakfast.

I wrote out a general "if you want to help" chore list detailing things people can feel free to do and where things are kept (vacuum, cleaning supplies, etc.). It's already on the fridge. I also wrote out "how to wash the diapers" directions and stuck it to the washer. I suspect only DH or my mom is that brave, but I thought even they would appreciate directions.

Yes! The hospital gave me a container, and I had a second at home.
