What do you do about heartburn?

I've never had heartburn before and didn't realize how annoying it is!   I've been eating smaller meals/snacks (even though I'm hungry!) but it seems to be triggered by anything I eat...yogurt, apples, granola bars, etc...

I've been taking Tums, but I don't like having to take them after every meal!  Any other suggestions?

Re: What do you do about heartburn?

  • My midwife suggested almonds or yogurt. The yogurt helps me but I haven't tried almosts yet. If yogurt is a trigger for you I would try the almonds!

  • When I feel it start I usually try to drink a big glass of milk and that seems to be helping for now at least

Ditto this.  I also whine and pout.  DH loves it.

  • I've been taking Zantac.  Nothing else seems to work.  Zantac doesn't completely take it away but at least I can get some rest afterward.  Last night was a really bad night for acid reflux.  I had to sleep in an upright position the entire night.  Ugh.

  • I take tums too but I take them before I start eating.  Also I make a note to stay away from my triggers when I find what they are (cranberry juice was a HUGE one!) Good luck!

  • MILK. It is the ONLY thing that works for me and I have horrendous heartburn. Had it with DD too.

  • I don't drink milk, so I guess I'll try the almonds.  I usually snack on them anyways, but I haven't in awhile.

Do I eat them with my meals or before/after I eat?

  • Tums if I'm at work, Maalox if I'm home (I needed something badly at work one day, didn't feel like spending the extra couple bucks on already over priced Tums at the store I went to--I prefer Maalox).

  • i take a Zantac in the morning and drink a glass of soy milk (since i'm also lactose-intolerant) when i get home from work... if it pops up again before bed, i drink another glass of soy milk.  The soy milk really seems to be working... but obviously, milk would do the same thing.
