What will baby call your mom??

So, my MIL will be "ma" because my husbands nephew already calls her that (he's 3y/o). But my mom doesn't want to be called "grandma, granny, or nana" and we call my g'ma 'mema'....So I'm trying to come up with something good.

What will your little one call your mom??

  • My mom was mad that my brothers wife side goes by nana and pop cause thats what they wanted, they kinda ended up with grandma and grandpa and i keep telling them my kid can call them that but then they think it will get confusing for the grandchildren so.. i dunno!

  • My mom wants to be called grammy, grandmama, and grandma. She thinks nana might be a good name, too. Confused

She'll get one name and that's it. So one of those, but not grandmama.

ETA: MIL is already grandma (and great-grandma!).

  • My mom has passed away, but not sure what MIL will be called.  Apparently she told SIL (who was kind enough to tell me) that she intends to teach LO that FIL's name will be Bee-Bop and that her nickname for MY LO will be "Moonpie."  WTH?!

  • My parents are MoMo and PoPo to all the grandkids.

My oldest niece started calling them that as a baby and it stuck.  She also called me Aunt Tommy instead of Kim.  To this day I am still Aunt Tommy to all of my nieces and nephews.  My oldest niece is now 17 and still calls me that!  lol

  • Nana ... (and my dad is Papa) - it's what we call his parents, too, and we always knew my mom and dad would go by that. My 9yo nephew has always called them that, too.

For DHs parents? No idea. I assume Grandma/Grandpa .. we got them shirts that say that when we announced the pregnancy to them. This is their first grandkid, so I guess it's up to us what we refer to them as.

My nephew calls my mom Mimi.  We always called my parents grandma and grandpa to him and he started Mimi and Papa on his own.  My children will just stick with that.

Growing up both my grandparents were grandma and grandpa I don't see why they have to be different... We just said grandma firstname if needing to specify...

  • We still don't know yet.  We are trying to get her to call my parents Mimi and Poppy but mostly she calls my mom Maw and calls my Dad Mamma lol.  He'll say who am I and she'll say Mamma.  She calls me Mom mom and DH Dadda.  I guess DH's  Dad and step-mom will be grandma and grandpa since his Dad already has great-grandchildren and eventhough I haven't met them, I'm assuming that is what they call him.

What will your little one call your mom??

What is your family heritage? Maybe you can look up what people call Grandma in another language (unless the language has clicks and weird sounds in it, it should be fairly easy to pronounce).

My LO will call my stepmom "Granny", my MIL "Grandma" and my mom "Oma." My mom is from Germany (born and raised there) so it's a no brainer on what we'd have our kids call her. We also call her mom Oma, but our kid will call her Ome (ooo-me), if they ever meet her.

  • My son (2 y/o) calls my mom G-Ma and my MIL Abuela (spanish)
  • My mom will just be "Grandma" but MIL will be "Nana". DH called his grandma "Meemaw", which is kind of cute.
  • My mom decided she wanted to be called Mimi.  I like it because she is definitely not a "Grandma".  MIL is grandma, this is the 9th grandchild for her so no changing that.  Not sure what my dad's wife wants to be called, I am thinking I will teach LO just to call her by her name (we don't really get along).  Devil

My grandmother was called Granny.  It was perfect for her, she was super petite, like 4'10'', and one of those crafty red-hat ladies Smile  Miss her tons.

  • Both of our parents will be reffered to as grandma and grandpa, as far as I know...

  • My own grandmother insisted when I was born that I call her by her first name. It was the deep south and this was contrary to everything else in my little brain, so couldn't get my tiny self to call her anything but Grandma Betty (I knew Grandma from my other grandmother). She didn't like very much.
  • Standard grandma and grandpa for all involved.  For clarification, we might refer to them as Grandma Firstname or Grandpa Lastname when talking about them at home, but my parents and DH's dad and stepmom and mom and stepdad will all just be grandma and grandpa.

    This is cute

  • I am a bit shocked that so many people responded with "Mimi."

My mom announced that this is what she would like LO to call her and I had never heard it before... nor did I ask her what she wanted to be called, but that's another story all together.

Is mimi really all that common?

  • I don't know yet - I should ask her.  My brother's kids call my parents Grandma and Grandpa.  My mom does not like being called Grandma - my dad made that decision without consulting her(!)

ILs will be Grandma and Grandpa for sure.  I'm not sure if we'll use first names to tell the two sets apart or what.  Thanks for bringing this up - we should figure it out!

  • I'm assuming my mom will just be Grandma, we haven't really discussed it.  My dad (my parents are divorced) is following the family tradition on his side and going  by Papa.  His family uses "Ahma" instead of grandma, but my dad never remarried.

I have no clue what MIL and FIL want.

  • Our baby will be with first grandchild on both sides. I *think* my husband's parents will be grandma and grandpa, and my mom said she wants to be called Gram or Nan. We will see.
  • this will be the first grandkid for my parents. my mom isn't ready to be grandma, and i dont blame her. her name is Betty, so she'll be "Bi Bi" like MiMi but better (she thinks).

and my dad will be Paw, possibly paw paw.

MIL and FIL will be grandma and grandpa.

i'm so looking forward to saying "lets go see paw and bibi!"

  • 'Mormor' it's Swedish for Grandma.
  • My mom wants to be called Grandma and my MIL wants to be called Gigi.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • For my parents we went with the good old southern "Papaw" and "Memaw". My MIL and FIL are going to be "Oma" and "Opa" which are German. (FIL is from Germany.)

My mom wants to be called Grandma and my MIL wants to be called Gigi.

This is what my DH's stepmother wants to be called.  I think she doesn't want to be called grandma because she never had kids herself.  I've never heard of this before.

My parents will be Baba and Deido (Ukrainian for grandmother and grandfather). For DHs parents I'm assuming grandma/grandpa.

  • I don't know... I always assumed grandma. I like nana too, though. I think it's cute :)

Idk what mil wants to be called either. This will be 1st grandchild for both sides, so I guess we get to decide what sticks :).

On a slightly unrelated note, this baby will have a lot of grandpa-type figures to name-- a long term bf and a biological grandpa on each side. My dad has claimed "papa." I guess the others will just have to fight it out over what's left. :)
