My friend and I were talking about terms for what we call subs. What do you call a long sandwich with meat, cheese & fixings where you live?[Poll]

It comes from the term "soda pop". Down south they call all soda "Coke". And then say, "What kind of Coke do you want?".

I just call it a sandwich too... but if I had to pick one, I would say sub.

On the "pop" note: down here most people just call all soda "coke."

I say hoagie though I know some places around here call hot sandwiches grinders, but I have never used that word.

Can I also add to this poll that one word people use for sandwich that makes my skin crawl is "sammie" or "sammich". It makes me want to punch people. Seriously, how old are you? Have you completed 1st grade? Or should I seriously not think less of you because you might have a speech impediment?

LOL! I used to have this whole silly "defense argument" for whenever my friends teased me for saying "pop" after I moved to the East Coast. My silly argument: the original word is sodapop and those of us who are smart shortened it to 1 syllable while the rest of you choose to keep saying 2. Hehe. I've now lived all over the country that I kind of 50/50 it now, not on purpose, sometimes "soda" comes out, sometimes "pop".

UGH!!! I can hear that voice right now. SO ANNOYING! She can take her sammies and shove them where the sun don't shine.

On topic, I call them a few different things. Just like I call soda pop both "soda" and "pop." I think it has to do with living all over the U.S. You pick up different words for the same thing and then just use them without thinking. I call a long sandwich both a "sub" and a "hoagie" but have heard and understand what a "hero" is, and even ordered it like that a few times!

I'm with you on this one. It was always "sub" and "pop" until I moved, and then moved and then moved some more. I completely understand all of the above sandwich descriptions and am comfortable using them depending on where in the country I am.

I grew up in southeastern CT, everyone calls them grinders there. And I distinctly remember that the hot lunch menu in school had "grinder day" on Thursdays. But I think CT is pretty much the only area in the world that calls them that. I live in NY now (only 3 hrs away) and everyone calls them subs...they've never heard of grinders. And I have relatives in NE PA that call them hoagies. Funny how a short distance can change something like that!

I'm from northeast PA -- We call it a hoagie too. The only people up there that refer to a sandwich as a "sammich" are the ederly / uneducated. They also tend to be the same people that say "yous" (plural form of you, of course), "Sundee" (instead of sunday -- you can also do this for every day of the week), and my favorite -- "heyna?" (word only used in NEPA that means "isn't it?").

OMG heyna!! My NEPA relatives say that ALL THE TIME!! lol. I have never found another area of the country that has any idea what that means.

I call it a Hoagie, that's what I grew up calling it in Pittsburgh. However, in Cleveland they lean towards "sub." They stare at me when I say "hoagie" like I just spoke another language to them.

I, do, however, call it Pop. DH calls it pop. It's like 50/50 around here. I don't get the big deal of what someone calls it, but I had a friend in Philly and she was always adamant that it's Soda and never Pop.

I said sub but I also say grinder- but then it has to be a grinder! Like hot with melted cheese from places like Mancinos. I grew up out side of Milwaukee and said soda- move to MI and it's "pop" here. I never converted. I also called drinking fountains "bubblers"- guess it's a Milwaukee area only thing- that one I dropped.
