2nd Trimester

nightmares...

is anyone else experiencing nightmares now that you're in the second tri?  i've tried looking it up to see if this is a common thing, but these dreams are nowhere near pg-related.  i'm having very vivid, detailed dreams about zombies, stacks of dead bodies, etc.  i'm not watching anything before bed that would trigger these.  and everything i've read has been about having dreams where something's wrong with the baby or the baby daddy leaving.  tell me i'm not alone in these disturbing nightmares!

  • you are not alone.  i just asked a friend about this last week.  all my  nightmares seem to be death related and detailed.  i even keep having frequent dreams about my father who passed in march.  but they are always about his funeral and his body in the casket.  the dreams i had with my DD were always ex-boyfriend related which they say are common.  i didn't know horror dreams would ever come along!

  • I've been having nightmares like this my whole pregnancy. They're awful. Last night's involved an earthquake and fire. Not fun :( I have heard these types of dreams are, unfortunately, quite common in pregnancy.

  • I have horrid horrid dreams. Some that are so terrible, that I am happy I have to use the restroom so much at night, just so I can get out of the dream!!! I think it is just part of it, and hoping they stop soon!

  • Yes, I've been having them too, through most of my pregnancy. My latest ones are about being in the Itallian Mafia, which sounds funny, but isn't at all.

Depending on how you feel about the most popular theories on dreams, the reasons as to 'why' we are having these nightmares during pregnancy will vary accordingly.  I tend to side with the idea that states that dreams are a way for the subconcious part of our brain to 'work things out' while we sleep, and that dreams are our brain's way of dealing with our issues and working through what is and is not going on in our lives in very creative and complicated ways. That being said, it seems most likely to me that these nightmares are our mind's way of dealing with the primal and subconcious fear of what is about to come from this baby; both the physical birth, which I believe all women have a real, primal fear of, as it was the leading cause of death in women for our entire evolution and up until a few hundred years ago; and the fear of the commitments and other emotional requirements of a child.

These are just my condensed thoughts on it anyway, hope it helped!

Sorry my spelling is bad, I couldn't get the sp checker to work for me today!
