Yup. We call it "doing pilates" because it looks like they're trying to do The 100.
Our pedi said it wasn't anything more than them trying to sit up on their own.
Unable to even.

Yup, and then he realizes he cannot so rolls to his side a bit to sit up.

C does this. I help him by taking his hands and playing a little game with him. I sit on the floor with him in front of me, take his hands and help him to sitting, then standing, hugging, then sitting, and laying down, chanting this: "First, we sit and then we stand. Hug the mama as tight as we can. Then we sit and lay down again."
My LO does this and I never heard anything about it being bad. She's just trying to sit up. If you hold her hands while she does it she will sit up. I thought it was good practice.
But thank you for making me feel better ladies! I needed this. I was so proud of him for trying to do this and I also play a game and have him grab my fingers and help him sit up!
I know it's bad for an adult to go straight from lying on back to sitting up. You're supposed to roll to your side and then sit up that way in order to avoid a back injury. It's probably the same issue for LOs. DS tries it all the time, but really just does crunches.
ETA: It is good practice to pull them up by their hands.
Juliana has been doing this forever! And her belly always looks so funny when she tries to do it. If I am trying to change her diaper and she is trying to sit up, I usually push her down and tell her to relax. lol.

He loves it.
Why is it supposed to be bad?
Edited because thebump likes to post without me.
THAT sounds like a good idea.
Luke tries to do it too. I don't see why it would be bad though.
Seriously, I do not know!!

Lol. I call it baby crunches when LO does this.
When N does this I hold down her legs and she sits right up.
