HELP! Nursing and biting.

I'm in tears and at a loss. If anything could go wrong this week, it has, I'm so over it. Nathan has always been a chomper when it comes to nursing but he only did it every so often. He now has a tooth fully in on the bottom and bites me EVERY single time he nurses. I'm black and blue and bleeding, I'm always in a state of fear when I feed him now. I'm crying because I don't want to wean him at all, we've both worked so hard to get this far. Before I used to be able to press him in to me when he clamped down and that would startle him enough to let go but now he bites suddenly and pulls back essentially scraping me with his bottom tooth. What the hell can I do?

Re: HELP! Nursing and biting.

  • I don't have any advice because Jonah was still toothless when I stopped, but just wanted to say ((hugs)). Sad

  • Pulling Cerys into me didn't help any- she would continue to suckle.  I ended up pulling her off and tapping her mouth and saying clearly "NO".

She actually usually cried for a second or two but would relatch and eat.

It took about 3-4 days of this before she stopped.

I hated making her cry but I wanted her to associate biting with "No" and no food.

Good luck!  I remember that fear and even worse the anticipation of the feeling you knew would come at some point during the feeding.  I hate it!

  • I never made it far with actual nursing but my best friend had this problem and it got really bad. The only thing that worked for her (and I know some people will really flame this but hey it worked and she is still successfully nursing 13 months later, even while being pregnant with her second). Every time he bit she would pull him closer like you said to get him to let go, then she would pull him off, pinch him kind of hard and say no. He eventually got it and it didnt negatively effect his eating progress so it might be worth a try.

  • Oh no!  THat is my worst fear now that dd has teeth.  I don't even understand how you "pull the in" and definitely do not have any advice, but want you to know I completely (albeit the actual pain) understand how you feel.
  • The first time Caleb bit me I pulled him off the breast and very sternly said "no biting."  The poor thing cried his eyes out....I think I startled him.  But he got the message and never did it again.  Good luck.

Us too. I would close up shop and end the session immediately. I'm sorry he's giving you such a hard time.

  • When did he get the tooth? When fin got each of his bottom teeth, he bit hard for a couple days. I think his teeth were just sore. I would yell "ow" really loud, and he would cry for a minute, and sometimes I would too. And if he did it twice I would put him down. Hope he stops soon!

  • With DS I pulled him off, flicked him in the cheek (lightly) and said no biting and he never did it again (he got teeth early and nursed til he was 17mths or so).  DD I did the same thing but it took twice and she never did it again (she got her teeth slower then DS and nursed for 13mths).  I also closed up shop for that moment (whether it was until next feeding or 5mins it just depended on how they were).  Good luck in what you decide.
