Have not scrolled... sorry if this is a repeat offender. Also - I delivered her Tues evening (haven't changed ticker!)
are VERY sore nipples in the
beginning normal? I don't remember this much pain w/DS at all. I almost
think her latch is off.. her mouth doesn't stay open wide enough for
long enough (though I ram her into me when her mouth is at it's
largest)... and I almost think she CHEWS a bit too. She is so so strong... much stronger than DS ever was.
I've been using
some all-natural nipple cream, and cold soothies. But, I'm just worried
it's a latch issue.. which I am not 100% sure how to go about
correcting.. ideas?
OR this could be just a diff kid/diff experience and my nips need time to toughen up. It IS only Day 3.. after all.
My boobs are humongo, they *seem* full of milk waiting to come out, but so far, just colustrum.
thoughts?..
Re: Breastfeeding - need help! Sore/cracked.
I was really sore and actually had blood blisters (yuck!) the first couple of days on my nipples due to LO's strong sucking! It got better after the first week. All I did was after every feeding i expressed a bit of colostrum/milk and let it air dry on the nipple.
Also for latching, my LC recommended sandwiching my areola with my fingers to fit as much of it as possible into LO's mouth when she opens wide. And if it is still painful after the first one or two sucks (even with chapped/cracked nipples) the latch is off and you need to re-latch - which sounds so much easier than it is when you have a hungry baby attacking your breast ...
Good luck!
No one told me that! I was planning on putting a call into my LC today to ask a few questions like these. It's not painful when LO eats, but he sucked some of the skin off of my right nipple yesterday and when he latches on that one I about jump out of my skin. After the first few seconds everything feels just fine. They did advise me to utilize different positions with LO so that my nips didn't get too stretched in one direction - but he refuses to nurse in any position except the 'cross cradle'.
My lactation consultant told me to rub some breastmilk on my nipples after every feeding. I was not a fan of using any cream, even if it said it was natural. It actually helped sooth it quite a bit!
She also told me to make sure Elodie's mouth looked like a fish. So when she latches on, I pull down on her chin a bit to pop her bottom lip out so it's open and sloppy around the nipple, instead of being pursed and tight-lipped. Does that make sense at all? hopefully.
Maybe look into La Leche League, I've gone to two meetings now and they are so helpful and supportive. The leaders are people who breastfed all their kids and they will sit down with you and watch LO latch and help. Free breastfeeding help!
I also found the Dr Jack Newman website to be really helpful, my midwives recommended his book and website. I've also heard that if you email him with questions someone will actually reply. Here is a link to the site that has some videos of proper latch, proper sucking, etc.
