overactive letdown

DD is almost 1 month and several times a day starts coughing while BFing because my milk sprays out like crazy!  I know that it will eventually calm down because it did with DS, but is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Once she pulls away and re-latches, she's usually fine...but lately she's been getting sprayed in the face:(

Re: overactive letdown

  • I feel for you and the LO, I am in the same boat right now. My right breast sprays her and she gets pissed off, pulls off and screams at me! I've tried to pump first and then feed her when the flow is slower but that's hit and miss. I've also tried lots of positions and keeping her more upright but that hasn't worked for us. I usually feed her on the other side, and then try to feed her on the right after a pump session. Hoping with time, she'll be able to handle the flow - or the flow will slow a bit!! This is making it frustrating for both of us.

  • DS is starting to learn to unlatch, let my spray lessen/slow down, then relatch. Try popping LO off and using a burp cloth or towel to catch the spray. Once it slows down enough that it isn't a fire hose, latch them back on. If you do this often enough, LO will learn to pull off at let down and let it slow before feeding.

  • Overactive letdown usually goes hand-in-hand with an oversupply. You can find some great info on it at kellymom. I started nusing DD off one side only at each feeding (and if she wanted to eat again within the next 2 hours I put her back on that same side). This corrected the problem pretty quickly for me. The only time we have to deal with it now is first thing in the morning when she has slept well the night before.

We struggled with that too.  I started hand expressing prior to nursing just enough that the flow was more garden hose then fire hose.  In the evenings when Cole was tired it was way more of an issue and nursing in side lying was a godsend, it takes gravity out of the equation and let him manage the flow much easier.  GL
