Good afternoon all. I just wanted to introduce myself as I think I'll be finding my way to this board much more often since I'm hitting the 39 week mark tomorrow and we're anticipating our little girl any day now.
I've lurked and read several posts (not much of a poster myself) and you ladies have great advice and experience that I'm sure I'll be drawing upon quite a lot.
I'm located in NoVA-Fairfax County and was just wondering if any moms local to that area have suggestions for mom groups, activites to get me out of the house with the little one early on, etc.
TIA!
Re: Hi
welcome!
I don't have any ideas for you as I was a recluse for most of my maternity leave, but good luck with the next couple of weeks! Sending lots of wishes for an easy delivery
Welcome! I am mostly a lurker here, but slowly coming out of the shadows.. .
I don't know where you are delivering, but Inova Alexandria sponsors a new moms group that meets Mondays at a church in Springfield and Tuesdays at the hospital. See info here: https://www.inova.org/healthcare-services/womens-health/locations/inova-alexandria-hospital/childbirth-services/new-moms-support-group.jsp. You can go even if you don't deliver there.
After I had my first, I went once a week to this group and we have a yahoo group where we plan playdates, ask questions, etc. Now my DD is almost 2 and we still get together with her "friends" from the group.
Good luck!
Congratulations and welcome. There is a MOMs club of Springfield but I find it very much directed to SAHMs. A lot of the local churches run moms groups as well. I met some local moms when I was on maternity leave at the free programs at the library and the B&N storytelling hour. I was mostly going for my toddler but there were moms there with younger children as well.
Welcome, I too am a bit of a lurker right now, and just entered my 26th week today, but I totally agree that this board gives really great advice! There is another Mom's group in the area, Baby Talk Mom's that is just getting started in for the greater Fairfax area. https://www.meetup.com/BabyTalkMomsFairfax/ I've been looking into it myself.
GL and congrats on your soon to be new addition!
Thanks so much to all of you for the recommendations!
Hi collegecouple! I'm sorry I didn't get back to your post sooner.
I actually have a master's in European and Public history and my time at Mt. Vernon was part of a paid summer internship during my master's program. In addition to the actual digging, I did all the site interpretation (interacting with visitors and explaining what was going on/why it is important to history/etc.).
Unfortunately, the economy made an even bigger impact on the non-profit sector so I'm not actually working in the field currently but hope to get back to it some day.
Congrats on the MA and working towards your PhD. My mom and husband both have PhDs (my husband's is in British history) and we always like to joke that I'm the smarter one because I didn't put myself through the torture of a PhD program :-) In reality, it's really great and I hope it goes well for you. Where are you getting your MA?
