  • We will probably buy a life jacket.  I think it'll just be easier on her when we're not in the water or on the boat.

Very true. I just imagine either being so uncomfortable.

  • I would not buy one of those suits with it built in, because I saw my nephew have a scare in one. He was in the pool wearing one with my brother and my DH when he was about 4. He was learning to swim back and forth between the two guys, both were paying 100% attention to him, and they were in the shallow end.

When he leaned forward to swim (after doing it like 100 times), he tipped forward, with his face full on in the water and got stuck like that. DH got to him within like 4 seconds, but it seemed like forever, and he was scared to death. He wouldn't swim at all the rest of the summer.

  • I looked at one of those suits with the floatation stuff built in, and the label on it said it was not to be used as a life-saving device, or some such statement, which led me to believe it's not a life jacket, but rather a swimming aid.  Anyway, DH already bought a life jacket for G for use on the boat.  I guess if I sign her up for a baby swim class we'll use it for that too.

  • life jacket.  we have a lake house so he'll be in and out of the water frequently, so easy on and off will work better for him!
  • We have a Coast Guard aproved life jacket.  We are practicing putting it on to build up his tolerance for summer.  Many of the suits with floats built in are not Coast Guard approved and are only meant to be swim aides, not life jackets.

  • There are no lakes around here with water warm enough to swim in (for a baby) around here, so we will only be going to pools this summer.  I don't see us buying a life jacket since we'll always be holding him, and pools usually have ones you can use if you want to try it.

We have only been to a pool a couple times so far, so maybe if we start going more frequently we'll change our minds.  I could definitely see us getting him one for next year when he'll be more mobile and might enjoy a good splash with more freedom (of course within our reach).
