Advice on phone number?

We got our phone number a few months ago and apparently the people who used to have it were in super debt so it was constant debt collectors who didn't believe we weren't them. I regret not changing the # then. But its been like 8 months now and everyone/banks/doctors/etc. have this #, so I really don't want to change it. The calls stopped for a while but recently started again. Apparently they've been giving this # out as their own...at least that what the person trying to confirm a meeting with them said...fml WWYD? Now if I know it's a debt collector I pickup and hang up, I'm tired of explaining and them not taking the # off the list. This is ridiculous and I partly blame crappy comcast.

Re: Advice on phone number?

  • Why do you blame Comcast?  They didn't go in debt and use your phone number.

You should have changed it right away.

  • Sounds like you are going to have to change numbers...  I would (and have) gotten a google voice number that I use for important places like daycare, drs, etc.  I have it set to ring my home, cell and work phones.  If I'm home and the phone and cell rings, I know its someone I should answer.  If its just the house phone, I don't usually even pick up.

  • I think you should have changed it right away too.  All I can say is either deal with the calls or change it now.  Write down a list of all the places and people  that are important and need to call your # and when you get a new # contact everyone on the list and give your new information to them.  It is really up to you which you would rather deal with.  Collectors calling or updating your info with people and places.

  • We had the same exact issue with Comcast! We just canceled the phone but we used our cell phones primarily so it wasn't a big deal. I don't know if changing your # will help if they give you another bum #. It was the biggest PITA, though, so it might be worth a shot.

  • We've never had good experience with comcast, but it's the only company that will service us where we live :( We wouldn't even have a home phone normally but where we are now we get crap reception-boo :(

  • We have had our number for over 6 years.  We still get calls for the lady before us b/c of her debt.  I actually got one this morning.  The creditors don't believe me.

  • That's likely to happen with any change of number these days - since  you're already so far into it, I'd keep the # . When I got my cell phone and kept getting tons of calls for the previous person who had the number I tried ignoring them at first, but found when I answered them and explained it took me off of some lists - so I stopped getting calls about late videos and other crap at least. It sucks to get those calls, and some of them won't believe you, but in the end the debt collectors want to find the person so if you tell them it's a new number that will at least point them away.
