July 2011 Moms

Anyone naming LO after someone?

I was wondering who was thinking of naming LO after someone? My girl name was a combination of a name I just liked + middle name from a friend of mine who has passed away.

But since I had a girl name pinned down, we found out that we're having a boy Big Smile

Now I am at 28 weeks and stuck. I keep coming back to my father's name: John David. DH's name is David too. I haven't loved any boy name yet. What I don't like about John David is that we have a REALLY common last name and the whole thing together woulds a) generic and b) like the name of someone who would've settled a town in Minnesota.

For a little background, my dad is the most awesome person ever, has worked ridiculously hard to provide a wonderful life for his family and is thrilled to be a grandfather (his first) to the point of picking out little elephant print fabric for my mom's baby blanket projects.

Re: Anyone naming LO after someone?

  • Our daughter's MN is Brianne and my dad's name is Brian so it honors him.  It happened by coincidence tho bc DH happens to just love the name Brianne.

  • DS's middle name is Dean after my grandfather and uncle who both passed away.

This baby's middle name will be Daniel which is H's middle name and FIL's name.

  • We are using my husband's MN for LO's MN. It's also the first name of DH's great grandad.

  • My DH and I wanted to stay as far away from naming LO after someone as possible. We made a list of names we can't use, instead of what we wanted, and started there. It's not that we don't love our parents, grandparents, or siblings. It's that we have pretty stellar relationships with parents, step-parents, grandparents, and step-grandparents, so in the end, someone will get hurt.

Is there a reason you don't use David as a first name? It encompasses your husband and father and you can add a less generic middle name in order to keep it from being so boring. Or just try a different first name. Michael David, Brandon David, Christopher David, just a few examples for you.

  • I really like John David and the meaning behind it.  I understand the part about a common LN though, I had a VERY common maiden LN and now have a VERY common married LN.  But if you like the name, I say go for it.

If we have a girl, the MN will be Mae after my grandmother who passed away.  If we have a boy, the MN will be H's first name.  It is a tradition in both our families to use a family name for at least the MN, if not the FN.  It's a tradition I really like, it's so much more meaningful than just pulling a name out of a book.

  • If we have a little girl, her middle name will be Lorraine after my aunt who passed away in 2004. If we have a little boy, his first name will be Jacob to honor the Mr.'s uncle who also passed away in 2004. We were both extremely close to our respective aunt/uncle, and it means a lot to name our baby after them.

I think if you love the name John David, who cares if his name will sound generic with your last name? If the name means something to you, that trumps the way it sounds. At least it does in my eyes or ears. :)

  • If we are having a girl she'll be named after a car (Eleanor from gone in 60 secconds) and she will have the same middle name as me and my mum. If it's a boy the middle name will the the same as DH's middle name and the same as FIL's name.

  • We're naming the boys after our fathers. If they had been girls, they would have been named after our mothers! Smile

  • If it's a girl her middle name will be Rose after my Great-Grandmother whom I was very close too.  If it's a boy, it's a toss up right now between Carl or Richard.  Carl is my H's Grandfathers name and also his and his fathers MN.  Richard is his dad's first name.  Since I picked the FN for the boy he gets to choose the middle name and he picked the FN for a girl so I get to pick the middle name.

I may use David as a middle name and swap out the first name, but I'm not a big fan of using it as a first name because of the confusion factor. I live in the south and people (my family and people in general) are fond of clarifying any junior/senior confusion by either giving the kid a horrible nickname (Bubba anyone?) or just calling him Junior.

I was tempted to stay away from family names for just this reason and my parents actually skipped the family names because of this too. My sister and I have names that were picked out based entirely on their prettiness factor and I have no complains.

  • If it's a girl her middle name will be Kay, which was the middle name of my aunt who died when I was 10 years old.

If it's a boy his middle name will be Kent, which is my husband's first name.

Still working on first names.Tongue Tied

    Yes

DS is Isaac Levi and his MN is in honor of my brother. We don't have any standard family naming traditions, so thankfully we didn't have to bow to any pressure. My brother and I went through a lot growing up and I think he is just an awesome person. My DH considers him one of his closest friends and DS has taken to his uncle like no one else.

LO will also have a family MN name. With our front runner name we are strongly considering John as a MN, which is both DH's MN and his maternal Grandpa's first name.

  • LO's first name will be Murphy, which is my MIL's maiden name.  Her only brother has two daughters, so the family name wouldn't be carried on otherwise.  His middle name will be John, which has a very long history in DH's family.

  • If LO is a girl, her name will be Ava Kay. Kay is my mom's middle name.

If LO is a boy, his name will be Cooper Henry. Henry is my Papa's middle name (who passed away 2 1/2 yrs ago) and it is also DH dad's middle name.

I picked Ava simply b/c I love the name Ava, and DH picked Cooper b/c he heard it on TV and really liked it.

  • We are naming our son Logan Robert. Logan is just a name that we both liked... Robert is after DH's father (and is also DH's middle name).

  • My LO's name is going to be Catherine Violet.

Catherine after my Nana. We were super close when I was a kid and she was such a wonderful independent woman and very classy, yet spoke her mind in a tactful manner.

Violet after my Great-Gram's middle name. She was actually my Nana's mom and her name was Hilda Violet...well I don't love Hilda for obvious reasons, and Violet is more my style simple/traditional/timeless.

My Maternal side is very strongwilled and such an inspiration. I would love for my daughter to follow that suit.

  • We are naming our LO Katherine AnnaMarie. First name is my mom, and Marie is my MIL's middle name.
  • LO's middle name will be DH's stepmother's maiden name. She has no kids, no siblings, and both her parents are passed away, so we wanted her to really feel a part of the family. Plus, we like the name.

Her birthday is in mid-June, and we plan on telling her then.

  • Our daughter is named after my grandfather. His name was Charles, so we went with Charlotte.  He was my rock until he passed away a few years ago.  We chose Grace as a middle name because we believe that it is by God's grace that we are pregnant. We went through 6 years of fertility treatment only to be told they could do nothing more for us and that we should adopt. We found out two days before Christmas that I was 11 weeks pregnant.

  • I am team Green. But either way, LO will be named after my dad (Charles) So It will be Charles William or Charlize Mary.

My FI is OK with Charles. But hates Charlize. He can hate all he wants. One of those WILL be on the birth certificate (especially since the Mary or William HAD to be in whatever name I chose because they are family names for him)

  • DS is named after both Mom's maiden names.  His first name is my Mom's and his middle is DH's moms.  DS number two will be named my brothers middle name and his middle name will be DH's middle name.  We're all about family names here.  I think it's a nice honor and our family loves it.  More importantly though DH and I both loved all the names.

  • We are not set on LO's first name, but her middle name will be Margaret after my late grandmother whom we all adored. She raised 8 children and to me and everyone else she was a saint.

We wanted to use an "M" middle name bc DS & DD's middle names begin with an "M," so it worked out perfectly that LO is a girl and my grandmother's name fit the "M" criteria.

  • Both of our boys have Irish first names (Keagen, Aidan). Keagen's middle name is Kenneth, after my dad who passed away 6 years ago, and Aidan's middle name is Thomas, after DH's grandpa. We thought MN would be a great way to honor them.

DS # 1's MN is Patrick, which is DH's MN and his Grandpa's FN.

  • I am naming my daughter (Sarah) after my best friend and also mentor like person in life - she was my brother's college girlfriend when I was 14 and when I had health/self esteem issues she was and is so awesome. Her middle name will be Riley after Riley Childrens Hospital since I am a Riley kid and they pretty much saved my life. Sarah Riley - have had the name picked out since college Smile
  • Her middle name is going to be Jean after my Mom who passed away a little over a month ago. We told her she could either pick her first or middle name for the baby's middle name before she passed away so its very special to me!
