Don't give in!! It will take about 3 days for them to totally break the habit, but after that, they'll forget they ever even had them. For every night/day you give in, you add another day so it becomes 4 nights, etc. Cold turkey is the way to go! It's hard, but it only lasts a few days.
Oh and try giving them a sippy of water in their cribs for them to drink.
We went cold turkey on the paci at bedtime, but gave it to DD for naps, meaning we put her down with it and then after she went to sleep we took it away from her. She'd nudge herself awake, not have the paci, and then put herself back to sleep.
I'm sure it will suck the first few nights, but I'm just going to have to be strong. H thinks we should just throw them all out so we aren't tempted to use them.
We got rid of the paci cold turkey right around 13 months as well, and much to our surprise it wasn't that bad. DS cried for about 5 minutes at bedtime and then woke once at night and cried for 2-3 minutes. He didn't cry at all at bedtime and woke briefly on the second night, and by the third night he didn't even notice it was gone. GL!!! I hope it goes well. Stay strong!
Mommy to two angel babies, 6w4d on 10/21/08 and 8w2d on 2/22/09. I still think of you and miss you every day!
dont give in!! and replace it with something else comforting. When DD would wake up crying wanting it, I'd go in and hand her a blankey, lay her down and pat her back. She eventually got it. It only took 3 days until she sttn without a paci!

Good luck! I agree, throw those paci's away. Then you have no choice but to go cold turkey. We took DD's paci away at 20 months. She only used it for naps/bedtime. I don't think she was super attached to it, but it was more of a routine. So instead of giving her the paci, we now let her turn on her sound machine instead. We replaced the paci with another task. We also showed DD that the paci's are all gone. So now she always says all gone when she is in her crib.
Re: Going cold turkey on pacifiers tonight - any tips?

Good Luck! You can do it!

You'll get through it!
I did Ferber and cold turkey paci all at once. It worked great. I thought I would give in but we didn't.
DS only had paci at bedtime and naps at home. there was no paci at daycare at all.
Thanks ladies!

Don't give up - it gets better. The first night was the worst, second night was better and she did not even miss it by the third night.
Make sure you are well rested the night you start because you might not get much sleep.
Physically throw them out so you don't cave in and get earplugs.
We did cold turkey and it took about 3 days but then he started teething and I caved in for naps only.
