Trying to Get Pregnant

"pulling the goal"

so my friends have previously been a bit grossed out when somebody said they're "trying", but now that we're all heading towards "trying" we were brainstorming some other phrases to use for that time when you stop using preventative measures.  The favorite two so far were:

"no longer playing defense" and "pulling the goalie" (ice hockey reference)

Any other euphemisms that you like or hate?

Re: "pulling the goal"

  • The people in my life who are trying are mature enough to handle hearing/saying, "We're trying to have a baby."

We say "We are trying to conceive" And we don't tell the whole. Its private.

This exactly...I hope we are all old enough to know that sex is needed to make a baby. If they can't help but have a giggle fest at the words 'trying' or 'baby' maybe they shouldn't be having one.

    Yes Exactly.

If I told someone we were trying to get pregnant and they were "grossed out", I am pretty sure I wouldn't talk to them anymore.

  • Well, there is always the much loved "baby dance" Stick out tongue

In all honesty, we have always just said we are trying for a baby. I have heard the term "pulling the goalie" but that has been a few times here and there between friends. They still say TTC too. It was more of a joke and the regularly used term.

  • I actually like "pulling the goalie" --nice euphemism, and as I am a former soccer player, its a fun reference.  Especially since most teams that pulled the goalie in an effort to score just got scored on themselves :).  But I have only heard it a few times, and always as a way to liven up conversation.

  • I know what you mean. My family is grossed out by it too, trying seems to equal images of sex. We have been saying "thinking about a baby" instead. My dad doesn't need to think about that. Yeah he's a grown-up but he's still my dad.

  • We haven't told anyone we're "trying" or otherwise. I have no intention of ever telling anyone unless one of us is diagnosed with a problem. When talking about it together we often say "TTC" because my DH is amused by all TB acronyms. :)

I agree with everyone else.  If you're not mature enough to say "We're trying to conceive a baby" or "We're trying to have a baby" then you are NOT mature enough to start trying.

Your family is grossed out by the idea that you would need to have sex in order to procreate? How did they think it happened? A stork? And if you say, "thinking about a baby," it somehow tricks your dad into thinking that baby-making won't involve sex? This makes no sense to me.

Yes Who would be grossed out to hear "We are trying to have a baby"?

  • I'm not really understanding how using a lame phrase regarding TTC automatically makes you immature...

Personally, I'm not telling many people because of our past fertility problems, but when I have, I say "we're hopefully trying to #2".  The "hopefully" is because if I'm not ovulating again...I can't really count it as trying.

My husband says "let's breed", and then I totally do NOT want to have sex...
