donating cord blood -- for free?

I'll be giving birth at Sibley and would like to donate my cord blood.  Does this cost money? How does one start the process for going about this?

Re: donating cord blood -- for free?

  • I delivered at Sibley and donated through the National Bone Marrow Registry. It was super easy- and the hospital and doctor waived all collection fees since I was donating.

How far along in your pregnancy are you? there is some paperwork and I think you have to have everything to them by 30 weeks.

They will send you the collection materials and all you have to do is call the number and fedex will come pick it up at the hospital.

That is unfortunate that your OB charges for donating. I know most will charge for collecting when you are banking it for possible personal use but they usually waive it when it is for donation.

yes, I was very disappointed! the place I was going to donate to actually told me not to do it if I had to pay (I had already filled out the paperwork - lengthy! - too).
