In my town its anywhere from $250+ seems $600-800 is average. Personally im not getting any done! Im going to wait till baby comes and do some family pics i think..
The session is free (newborn) but we have to pay for the prints. I don't know if we have to buy the cd or not, I definitely want it.
The session is free because he just started newborns this year and wants more pics for his portfolio.
We use a photographer who comes to us (or a location we choose), get a DVD of all pictures and rights to print them- all for $150 for each 1 hour session (small additional discount if you book package- like 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, 1 year). We've been using the same person for a few years- so we have a locked in price.
ETA- we are very lucky- we got a LOT for what we pay. A low-res pic from one of #1's sessions (I don't feel like digging for the high-res one)-

For a newborn session it is $250-studio, $300-location session fee. Prints start at $20, digital files {on a disc that you can print anywhere} are $35 each, print packages start at $140, a disc of 35 digital images, with a 5x7 of each photo is $700. When it comes to photography, like many things, you get what you pay for.

We used a great local photographer...but now she charges a crap load for a 30 minute session.
So I think I found another great local photographer who will come to our house for a 3 hour session for what our last photographer charges for a 30 minute session. She will edit all the prints and put them on a cd...

She does more documentary photos...
I live in the cities- can you share specific names? Right now I'm looking at JM or Gruman. Thanks!

I know you didn't ask me . . . . but . . . I'm not sure how much she charges- but a lot of friends from back home use Emily Steffen- I love seeing her pics on FB.
So glad I have a friend who is a professional baby/family photographer. Even still, she charges $150 for 1 hr and an edited CD and her images are amazing and way better than the $300 photographers around here.
We just recently found a lady who is a SAHM who use to work in a photo studio. She just does photography on the side. She charges $50 for us (her rate now is $75, but since we are repeat customers, we still get the $50) and that is for 2 hour photo session anywhwere we want and then and edited disk with the photos. She will either have the prints done, or we can do them ourselves. We were spending way more than this at Portrait Innovations and Sears and the photos are so much better and she really takes her time with my daughter. I can't wait to have her take pictures of the new baby. She even offered to take maternity photos for free (which I'm not a fan of) and she wants to do a tea party with my daughter at no charge as well.
I won't be paying it, since she owns me for several hundred dollars in sessions already that I pay off via assisting her at weddings, but if I did my photographer, Gina Zeidler, would be $450.

This rate is the closest I have seen to a real package price. I'm a photographer and when I did maternity and newborn I charged minimum of $650 for a 2 hour session with a selection of 20 images retouched in a book + 2 5x7's, a CD was an additional $250 for 20 images + printing prices so an end total would be around $1000-$1200. You ladies are getting serious deals! Now I am married to a photographer so I am putting him to work !
