Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

At what age did your LO use utensils correctly?

I am trying to teach my 13 month old how to stab pieces of food with his fork. He will eat food off of it, but he doesn't really get how to use it yet. And the spoon is just a disaster-yogurt everywhere!

Just curious as to when others started to introduce utensils, and when their child mastered using them.

Thanks!

  • We started at 9 months and he still makes a mess some days... by 16 months he was "ok" with them

  • If the spoon or fork is in his hand...he refuses to bring it to his mouth. I try to bring it to his mouth and he fights me. He was the same way with finger foods until 13 months....ugh.
  • He started using a fork at 12mo, but mostly with us helping him stab things.  He mostly has the hang of it now, at least with fruit.  Other things like pasta are more frustrating for him.  He has just started using a spoon at almost 17mo, but it usually is more of a dip and put in his mouth upside down sort of thing!  We always gave him a fork or spoon to play with and let him show us when he was interested in using it like he was supposed to.

  • Just got the fork figured last week, so right aroud 17 months. Sometimes he'll need help stabbing. He knows how it works, but his aim is a little off.

    Spoon is a disaster still!

  • DD has been using a spoon with yogurt, applesauce, etc. since about 13 mo. She's still having issues using a fork to stab pieces of food; I think it might be a bit harder than just dipping a spoon in food. Have you tried giving your LO a spoon? He might find that easier at first...

  • She started using them well at about 17 months and now she is a pro at 19.

  • DD2 is hit or miss. She works really hard with the fork, but needs help with stabbing food. Once it's on there, she's golden.

I would rate her spoon proficiency as "decent mechanics, but still a freaking mess." It's a good day when she doesn't need a bath after a bowl of yogurt or applesauce.

She is also still prone to just holding the spoon in one hand while she uses her other hand to eat fistfuls of yogurt.

  • At 14 months she's just starting to get good with a fork - and by "good" I mean she can actually stab the food and get it to her mouth maybe 50% of the time. She's been ok with a spoon for several months, but it's still quite messy!

  • We also started at 9 months and he was doing really well by 12 months. He does a great job now but does not always want to use them.
  • DD uses a spoon correctly sometimes, at least she tries.

    Forks, no way!

    She's 18.5 months.

  • I think my DD got pretty good with utensils (both fork and spoon) around 18-19 months.  Fork came first.

DS is just a year and is doing pretty well with the fork.  If it's a crappy baby fork, he can't stab anything, but if I give him a salad fork, he can actually get some himself.  He can't really scoop anything yet, but if I fill up a spoon for him, he can get it in his mouth.  He REALLY wants to use utensils. . . probably because he watches his sister.

  • I'm actually really proud of DD because she does bring the utensils to her mouth. She's adorable with her spoon because even if yogurt's on it, she simply MUST dip the spoon in the yogurt cup. Even if she doesnt get food on the spoon she then puts it in her mouth. She sooooorta did the same with her fork but it's an Air Fork One and therefore really not toddler-friendly when it comes to solo flights (har har). I'm also scared she'll stab herself with it, lol. It's kind of bulky.

  • he doesn't get a spoon but he's at a 75% sucess rate with a fork! lol sometimes its hard for him to stab the food! He started using a fork around 10months correctly and has gotten better over time. BUT he LOVES using the fork and will use it with 9 out of 10 meals so he has lots of practice! He even requested a fork during his smash cake at his party! lol
  • DS is 20 months and isn't good with a spoon -- he puts it in his mouth upside down, and the food falls off onto his lap! LOL

Forks, however, he's pretty good with. I often have to help him stab the food... but he knows what to do.

  • DS can do a spoon well enough - he needs help dipping but he can get it into his mouth.  A fork, he stabs but doesn't get anything on it, then he pulls the food off of the fork and eats.
