....adding more chemicals (rinse aid, or something similar) will help my dishes have LESS residue on them?

I find that when I use any dishes that have been cleaned in the dishwasher, I need to rinse them first or I can taste the dishwasher detergent.  My dad was saying I needed to add a rinse agent, and not only do I want to avoid using additional chemicals, I truly don't understand how adding more junk makes dishes come out better rinsed.

I know dishwashers are more water/energy efficient than washing by hand, but this is really annoying me.  Our dishwasher probably sucks a bit, but we plan on moving in a year or so, so we won't be buying a new one.  It's only been used by us for a little under 2 yrs.

    Both. I know Whole Foods has them & my local health food store. But I recently started buying them on Amazon with the subscribe & save because it's such a HUGE savings.

    Also, you could use vinegar as the rinse agent.  That might still help the problem and avoid extra potentially "tasty" chemicals.

    Yep, I was going to suggest white vinegar too.  I put a couple Tbsp in on the last rinse cycle, but I've heard that adding it to the rinse agent dispenser.
