Fair hourly rate for sitter for 5 month old!?

So...I work at home very part-time.  My schedule is super flexible.  I can basically do as much or as little work as I want but would really like to take on a little more to help support our finances and bills.  My sister is a nanny for a family with 3 kids currently but will be out of work for the summer starting next week so I've been thinking of hiring her a couple days a week for 2-3 hours at a time so I can focus on work between those hours.  Even though she is my sister I plan on paying her especially considering she'll be out of her other job after next week.  Though I've contemplated just working during his nap times, I have a hard time getting things done related to housework if I use nap times for working only.  So... I thought this may be a good way to get more work accomplished with having my sister here to watch DS!

Anyone know what a fair hourly rate is these days?

  • I'd say $10 at least

  • I was a sitter last year for a 6 month old and I was paid $15 and hour and they'd be out for about 6 hours or so. I'd come home with about $90 a night. I don't know about anyone else because they were the only people i've babysat for.

  • In the area where I live you will pay between $3.00--6.00 per hour.

I only have to pay 4.00 per hour which I think is a steal Smile

  • Our sitter (a 21 yr old college student) around $7/hr (she works two days a week from 9-4) She walks away with about $50/day.

Really?  I'm originally from the region as well, and I know I was paid more than that when I was in high school and babysat (I got $10 an hour).  That's not even close to minimum wage at $4 per hour!  I would at least pay minimum wage, especially if it is your sibling if it is at all possible for you financially.  I wouldn't want my sister to not be able to pay her bills because I paid her less than what she would make working fast food to be with my child!

  • I WAH too!

$12-15 was the rate I was consistently quoted when interviewing.

I required a BSc for my nanny, so I pay on the upper side of that. And she gets PTO.

  • Our son has in home daycare and she charges $25/day. He is with her from 830am-5pm.

  • Have you asked your sister? What does she currently make as a nanny? I would pay more for an infant than an older child and certainly more than minimum wage. I still can't believe that someone would pay less than that for taking care of a child, especially an infant. How would that be worth it to the caregiver?

  • There are some regional differences... but we generally pay $11-$15/hour. When I was a nanny I made $18-$20 an hour, but I'm a certified teacher and certified in infant first aid/cpr, etc. etc. etc.

DD goes to daycare and I only pay $110 a week. A babysitter coming to your house and only caring for your child/children is a whole different ballgame (IMO).

  • We are paying a friend to babysit LO 4 days a week for 9 hours a day 2 days, and 5 hours 2 days, We are paying her $120 a week to watch LO at  her house which comes out to about $40 for a full day and $20 for a half day. i say she is babysitting because she has no other kids she watches besides her own 3 year old LO but she is more like a nanny since she has all the baby stuff needed at her house.

I live in NW Indiana (Highland to be exact) and my sitter only charges $2.50 an hour.  K is there from 7-5 everyday so I pay her $125.00 a week.  She also watches my older daughter sometimes!  I feel extremely blessed to have her, and I have tried to give here more money, but she will not accept it.  She is a SAHM and her kids are older so I think she just likes having a little baby around. :)

  • We have a PT nanny that comes to our home 15 hrs a week and we pay her $10 an hour.  She is a college student.  We interviewed around 5 people and that seemed to be the going rate.

This we pay $25 a day but she is only with them from 1 to 6 pm. Her regular rate is $8.25 per hour.

  • This is just what my sitter charges me per hour. Its 130.00 per week.

I was on the hunt this week for a new sitter and the range per week around here was from $75.00 to on the high end of $240.00 which equals between 3.00 to 6.00 per hour on a 40 hour work week.

My sister was my sitter also and I paid her $125.00 but she also worked a full time job and this was her go out and play money.

  • I have made anywhere from $10-$16 an hour as a sitter
  • I sometimes babysit my neighbor's kids on Saturdays so she can get out of the house and go play pool etc. I get $20 a night from about 9 pm to around 2 am to babysit her 5 kids, but honestly, the oldest one's 13 and the youngest is on her way to 2, the older kids take care of the younger ones and I'm basically just there so there's someone over the age of 14 so she can legally leave the house. I figure $20 a night isn't bad to sit on someone else's couch and eat the snacks she leaves for me.
