NBR- Dog owners- flea preventative recs?

We are out of our flea preventative medicine but need to get some ASAP since we live in Florida and fleas/ticks are a problem here and the weather is already hot! We've always done a medication that you apply to their backs, don't remember which one we did most recently. I know there's Frontline, Advantage, Advantix, etc.

Any recommendations? We're open to whatever...we took a few months off during the winter but it's time to start back. We haven't seen any fleas or ticks on them recently, but obviously want to keep it that way.

I know I could post this on the pet boards, but I figured I'd check with you ladies, as I've never been there before!

Revolution all the way - it does fleas and heartburn.  I used to love in Florida and still had a problem with fleas with the Frontline.  I've never had a problem with Revolution.

hehe, suffering from heartburn in your last trimester?

  • Frontline plus over here!

We also use heartguard for hearworm!

  • Depending on your dog, frontline may not be as effective. If your dog has more of an oily coat use Comfortis its a tablet (works AMAZING), if your dog is a little drier frontline plus works well.

  • Frontline is the only thing I ever used.

  • We use Interceptor. It protects against heartworm, fleas, roundworm, hookworm, & whipworm. They are flavored chewable tablets... we've never had an issue getting our pup to eat one!

  • Thanks for the recommendations! I guess I'll check with my vet and see what's available...I definitely like the idea of a combo flea/heartworm medicine though. Right now, they're on heartguard and I think k9 advantix, but I can't remember for sure on the flea medicine.

  • Comfortis and Heartguard.  Thanks for this post, btw, we need to restock. There's a new pill out, Tri-something, that might be fleas, ticks, and heartworms all in one.  That would be nice.

  • Just a FYI, but I've noticed from my own dogs and also from working as a bather at a grooming salon, if its a really bad flea season the topical stuff (Frontline, Advantage, etc.) sometimes does not work all that great or it won't last the whole month. We had a bad flea season last summer and the topical stuff did nothing. So I switched to using Comfortis (its a pill) and it worked awesome. There is also more natural stuff if you want to go that route, check out using Neem Oil, I've heard it works well and is natural.

  • Frontline Plus & Heartguard.  I've used this with him since we first got him (85 pound lab) and he has never had fleas or ticks.  He is outside a lot and constantly around other dogs at daycare.  We do it year round, not sure it that makes a difference.

  • We use Frontline for fleas and ticks. And Interceptor for hrtworm. We have small indoor dogs, but we have to use tick prevention for whenever we take our dogs to my in laws once a week. We eat dinner over there on Wednesdays and they usually go outside with her dog and roam. They live in the woods. So, I say all this bc I don't know if it's good for everyday exposure, but it lasts for them for their 4x a month out in the elements.
