Middle-of-the-night screaming during diaper change

When DH or I change G's diaper during the night (when she's woken up for one reason or another) she screams bloody murder.  I mean she lets out some serious "I am being tortured" screams while on the changing table.  It doesn't matter if she's already eaten or not - that doesn't seem to play into it.  She carries on like this until she's changed and snapped back up, then she's fine.  Exhausted, but fine.  She doesn't do this during the day or evening - just during the middle-of-the-night change.  What gives?  Do your LOs do this?  Anyone have any ideas on what's going on or what we can do to try to modify this behavior?

  • I have stopped changing LO's diaper during the night because of this.  I think he was waking up but only semi-waking.  So I just leave the lights off, turn the twilight turtle on and nurse him in our recliner.  He is usually half-asleep while nursing and totally out cold by the time he is done.  I think the diaper changes were waking him up too much and he was getting angry about it.

  • My LO did this when we got back really late from a wedding and I decided to change her into pajamas before putting her to bed. She did not appreciate being waken up or changed. As far as normal diaper changes go, I do not do that in the middle of the night.

  • Same exact thing here, but fortunately I don't usually have to change his diaper during the night anymore.  My mom was staying with us a few weeks ago, and I forgot to warn her about this, and she came rushing upstairs in the middle of the night thinking that LO was being mutilated or something... lol.  I wonder what it is.  He loves diaper changes during the day.

a similar thing happens with us. I think that the baby really doesn't like to be woken up.

For a little while we weren't changing the diaper overnight, but for a few nights in a row he soaked the crib (once with poop mixed in) and I just thought we needed to change the diaper overnight. It's a tough decision.

We use cloth diapers so it is a little different, but I have heard several moms say that if you go a size up in the disposables  for nighttime it usually holds them for the whole time.

  • I don't change in the middle of the night! I use Huggies overnights. He's only 13.5lb and size 2, but the size 3 overnights are doing the trick!
