when can the ultrasound detect a heartbeat?

I thought it was around 6 weeks or so... I know they schedule most people 8-9 weeks though. thanks!

  • Six weeks is correct. They schedule it later because it can go either way at 6 weeks. If the pregnancy is viable, it will be present at a later scan.

  • 6 weeks is right on the cusp of detecting a HB by TVUS.  Many doctors don't schedule is until 8 - 9 weeks so they can be absolutely certain of seeing a HB.

  • It can or cannot around 6 weeks. It's usually too early. 10 weeks is normal where I am from.

  • Hi!

I had a doctor tell me I could not do an ultrasound until 8-10 weeks, but I wasn't satisfied with that so I actually ended up seeing a different OB who was more than happy to do an ultrasound at 6 weeks. I ended up liking this new doctor much better as well. He's nicer, has better technology in-office to do tests and ultrasounds, and in general, much more accommodating.

If you're not satisfied with the answer you've received and you'd like an ultrasound, I'd look around at other OB's.

  • Mine was detected at 5w5d but the tech said that was the earliest she had ever seen one. I totally understand why they wait because if you dont see one it is absolute agony waiting another week.

  • We saw ours at 5 weeks 6 days, but it was too early to HEAR. We only went in to figure out how far along we were, and the tech happened to find the heartbeat for us... :)
