Baby Mullets - Opinions Please

Someone made a "business in the front, party in the back" joke in reference to by daughter the other day.  It wasn't a mean comment, I was asking for advice about what to do with her hair.

So here's my dilemma.  She doesn't have much hair. I keep the front short, because it's pin straight and sticks in her eyes.  It's not thick enough for even a tiny barrette or snap thing.  The back is getting kind of long, because I would like to be able to put it in pigtails or a ponytail some day.

So  - Can baby mullets be cute?  Or will I hate myself in 10 years when I look at this pictures?

  • I'm thinking babies can make any hairstyle cute.  can you post a pic of the back?

  • aww, your DD is adorable!!

I agree that anything looks cute on a baby.  My DD is sort of rocking the mullet thing too, but I refuse to cut her hair because then I think she'll just look like a boy.  I think we just have to get through this awkward hair phase and let it grow in!

  • My nephew had a mullet at 6 months because his hair was out of control. It was cute but we all cracked jokes about it until my sister finally got his hair cut.

  • My DD has gotten this comment so many times, but honestly I'm just happy she finally HAS hair lol. It will eventually grow it I'm sure. I try to brush the hair in front to the side.

Her hair is long enough for pigtails but not the top... It'll grow and it's cute for now :)

  • DD rocked the baby mullet until last month when i finally got her hair cut.  it looks SO much better!!  she just evened out the back and cleaned up the sides and it looks so much fuller and doesn't knot as easily.

  • Sorry that pic is so big - I haven't mastered the image in post thing.

That was about a month ago, so the front has been trimmed again, but the back is a little longer.  Not long enough to pull into a pony tail or anything.

So, should I just give up and cut it like a boy?

  • If you want to keep the length to help it grow out I would start styling it with pigtails or clips in the front to help distract from the mullet look. I don't think her hair is super mullety looking though.

  • Aw, she's so cute! You could go either way.  If you cut her hair short maybe use barettes and hair bands or leave as is and start pulling it into pig tails in the back.

  • I'm not a fan of baby mullets, but sometimes there aren't a lot of good options as hair grows in.  With both our girls, when their bangs started to hang in their face I bought tiny rubber bands and stuck a cute little pony tail on top.  Like this:

Thanks.  I think I'm going to have to do this.  I just don't want to give up on the dream of having girl hair.

I know!  How is sleeping wedged under an end table NOT comfortable?

  • Natalie's hair is exactly like your DD's , even the colour!   DH wanted to cut it until someone suggested pig-tails.

So, when we go out, Natalie gets pig-tails.  Goody makes some elastics that are super small and will hold a pig tail in super fine baby hair.

  • Against.

Though, I must admit that my baby is currently sporting his second mullet. I swear those suckers in the back of his head grow at an insanely fast rate.

I'd just trim her back a bit if it bothers you.

  • When DD1 started getting the mullet, I took her to have her hair trimmed.

It's amazing the difference it makes just to have things evened out and neatened up a bit. It wasn't "cut like a boy", and they hardly did more than nip off the ends. But it still kept us out of untamed mullet territory.

It also meant that as her hair kept growing, it looked more even because the ends had been trimmed and were under control.

I think a little bit of mullet is unavoidable when they're at that stage of hair growth, but keeping things trimmed does wonders.

I definitely agree with this.  At about 18 months we finally cut DD#1's hair so that it was more even.  She ended up with a really cute little bob!

  • Preston had the worst mullet ever and I finally caved and he got his first haircut at 18 months. Harrison is not far behind and will be getting his first haircut next month.
