Bilingual Mamas (Which language will you use?)

I was born in Korea and speak Korean fluently as well as conversational Mandarin-Chinese.  I plan on speaking Korean to LO the majority of the time, leaving English up to DH (who does not speak Korean).  Since I will be with LO most of the time (SAHM), I'm guessing this little girl's first words will be in Korean.

What's your plan for a second language for LO?

  • I will be speaking English to our little guy and DH will be speaking Swedish to him.

  • I'm not bilingual, but have a friend who is (she and her DH both, actually). They spoke Turkish at home, so it was the first language their kids learned. The kids picked up English pretty quickly from tv, friends, school. etc.

  • I'll speak Spanish to him and my husband will speak to him in English.

  • We will both speak in Sinhala and English.
  • Spanish and English. Mostly Spanish because my mom will take care of her and she only speaks Spanish (well she speaks a little English), but she will get English from me and my siblings.

  • I'm pretty sure we'll be using mostly English. DH is Cambodian/Chinese and I'm Filipino. Our common language is English but we'll both try to teach LO some Cambodian and Tagalog.

  • I speak french and english mostly. I know german and spanish but it was just something I learned on the side. We will be putting our children in french-immersion programs in the the schools here so they will know both languages very well. My guys family is Jamaican and I'm sure our children will pick up on their lingo along the line somewhere too lol

  • I will be speaking primarily in Spanish to the baby and DH in English. DH knows Spanish pretty well so after a while we will switch and DH will speak in Spanish primarily and I will speak in English. DH also knows Portuguese but we will not be speaking it to our LO.

We're also going to try and do some sign language.

  • It's fun to see that there will be so many bilingual LOs around! Big Smile

  • I will be speaking English to our son and my husband will be speaking Portuguese. I found a lot of bilingual books for kids on amazon.com, so I plan on getting some of those, too!

  • Our situation is a little different. Growing up in Montreal, Quebec, DH and I are both bilingual (French and English) but our mother-tongue is English.

We will speak to DD in English because we know she will go to school in French Immersion (which is what my hubby and I did).

But my belief in situations like yours is that it's important for the baby to associate a language with a person so you are doing exactly the right thing.  Our friends have a daughter who is 18 months.  Dad is Portuguese(but he speaks to DD in English only) and Mom is French Canadian (speaks to DD in French)...the grandparents speak to her in Portuguese.  Their daughter understands all three languages very well...and she seems to understand that the difference between them.  It's so cute because her mother will ask her in French to say "merci" and she'll say to me "thank you" because she knows with us it's English!

  • I will be speaking mostly Russian. I want it to be her first language. It won be hard since our whole family is Russian, our friends, and even the church we attend is Russian.
