Update to Heart Defect found at 20week u/s

The doctor was able to find two problems with LO's heart. One is called VSD - Ventriculuar Septal Defect which is basically a hole in his heart and the other is DORV - Double Outlet Right Ventricle which means that the aorta atery that is supposed to be pushing out oxygen rich blood to the rest of his body is mixing with the oxygen poor blood from the left through the hole and not pushing out enough oxygen rich blood, making the aorta much smaller than it should be.

He will have to have open heart surgery after he is born. We are not able to see the Perinatologist for another 3 weeks because I need to be 24 weeks for them to get a better view of his heart. At that appointment they will be doing a fetal echocardiogram to get a better idea of what his heart looks like. We will know more about what to expect after his birth when we talk to this specialist.

We have been reassured that his problem his fixable and he is perfectly safe right where he is at, just the real risks are when he is born. He is measuring right a track as far as everything else goes and he does not seem to have any chromosomal disorders that often go along with heart defects. We are choosing not to do the amniocentesis.

Good luck sweetie! I am glad that you have a diagnosis, the waiting is the worst.

I have a good friend whose daughter had a severe and rare heart defect -- her Dr's said the same thing -- when baby is in the womb, that is the safest place, because mom does so much work to make baby grow strong. My prayers are with you!

Thoughts and prayers that everything will be ok. I just wanted to post because I have a coworker whose granddaughter was born last year with a hole in her heart and needed surgery 3 days after birth. They knew throughout the pregnancy that it would be required and she was born at Childrens Hospital in Philly. The entire process was managed very well by the hospital and staff and although it was rough for a week or so, she is now a happy and healthy toddler. The doctors are amazed at her progress because she actually started walking before she was one! So, I am sorry you have to go through the stress and no one wants to watch their baby have surgery, but most likely all will be well in the end!

I'm so sorry you are going through this. DH's cousin's daughter was diagnosed with a heart problem in utero as well. I don't remember exactly what it was, but she needed surgery right after birth (maybe even the same day - can't remember) and needed two other surgeries. They knew before she was born that she would need 3. I believe she has to be on medication forever, but she is just fine now. Just as active as any other 8 year old girl. I just wanted to share a positive outcome story with you to help you feel a little better.

My friend's son had the issue with the hole in his heart and for some reason they didn't know until a few months after he was born. He had surgery and now everything is great and he is a perfect little 2-year-old!
