Heartburn & Upper Arm Pain

I have only had heartburn once in my life and it was so long ago I forget what it was like. But last night I woke up at 2am with the worst pain and burning in between my boobs. I assume it is heartburn. But with it I also had achey pains in my upper arms and a heaviness on my chest like I couldn't breathe deeply. I sat up in bed and ate some papaya extract which kinda helped, but not until just now am I feeling better.

It wasn't anxiety or panic, I am experienced with both of those. Is this just what BAD heartburn is like? Or does it sound like more than that? I don't want to run to my midwife with every little ailment (especially if it is just heartburn) so wanted to see what you ladies thought. I'm not overly concerned about it, but it was miserable while it was happening.

I took cranberry pills about an hour before bed, that is all that was new to my routine.

Re: Heartburn & Upper Arm Pain

  • I haven't had the arm pain, but the chest pain sounds like it could be heartburn.  For me it literally feels like a burning in my esophagus.  It can be pretty painful.  I've resorted to Tums a couple times just so I could get some sleep.

I'm going on day 4 of not sleeping more than a few hours each night. It sucks a big one. Especially this morning when I told DH about it and he said "come on, you aren't one to complain about your aches and pains, it couldn't have been that bad". I wanted to throw a shoe at his face.

  • sounds like heartburn.  sometimes it's so much i want to cry.

as far as the upper arm pain, i've found that because i'm sleeping on my sides all the time now and not used to it, my arms sometimes hurt right when I wake up just from the pressure of me sleeping that way.  not sure if that could be what you are experiencing too.

That very well could be it, lol duh Jill! Thanks! The heartburn is crazy. I actually did cry a bit this morning, from the pain combined with no sleep. I feel for you ladies that have it regularly, I had no idea.

  • I've also found propping myself up helps a bit (but admittedly not *that* much).  It's worth a try though.  Maybe just add another pillow.  I would definitely talk to your midwife about it if you're in that much pain.  Hugs to you.

I will try that. I feel like I am just a big baby about it because it is a new pain/experience. I am going to take the cranberry pills with my lunch today (in case the digestion of those last night triggered the burn) and if it happens to that extent again I will talk to her about it. Thanks April. =)

  • Mint Maalox straight from the fridge, ice cold ginger ale, and sit up in bed until it goes away.  Heartburn is killer and I am not looking forward to it down the road.  I had it earlier a few times, but fingers crossed, its subsided for now..... feel better.

  • It sounds like heartburn and you are probably just not getting enough soid rest. However upper arm pain can be associated with etopic pregnancies as bizzare as that sounds. If you have had u/s and everything is fine I would just chalk it up to heartburn which is never fun!! But I dont think it hurts to check with a Dr/midwife you have any concerns:) Hope you feel better!!
