Annapolis mom w/ metro/stroller question?

Hi all-

I am normally on the Bmore board, but figured this was the place to ask about the DC metro.  I want to take the kids to the zoo, probably w/ some other moms/kids.  I was thinking about parking at New Carrollton and taking the metro in, is it possible to take a stroller on the metro w/o folding it up?

We just got back from a trip to NYC and took the stroller on one subway trip and on the LIRR to go out and see my ILs, so I was hoping I could repeat this closer to home.

TIA!

  • Yes, it's definitely possible.  It's easier if you're not travelling in rush hour, though.

  • Yes it's possible. I agree about rush hour. It gets really crowded and it is not pretty. Also, a smaller stroller makes things easier. There are elevators in every station so look for those.

  • Definitely possible. I've taken kiddo in the stroller on the Metro several times. But ditto pp to avoid rush hour, so ideally you would travel some time between 10 am and 4 pm.

  • Thanks!  We would definitely avoid rush hour.  I have a bugaboo frog w/ a little wheelie board that flips up/down for my 3 yr old to stand on if she doesn't want to walk- so not a small stroller, but not a huge one either.  Not all of the NYC subway stops have elevators- I wasn't sure if the metro was more accessible.

  • You might want to double check on Meto's website that the elevators are working in the stations you will be using.  A lot of the elevators are out of service for repairs (not as many as the escalators) but it would be a pain to get to the station and not be able to get out b/c the elevator is out of order.
