Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Just booked LO's first flight and I'm freaking out!!!

He's 3 months now; He'll be 4 months when we fly. ADVICE?!?! The only things I've heard from people so far is: nurse him while we are taking off and wear him (in the sling) during the flight. Will they make LO go through the metal detector? I know that might sound stupid, but will they just pat him down instead? Any health risks for LO's so little going through a metal detector? What baby necessities CAN'T I take on the plane with us? Should I bring bottled BM or will they make me dump it?

  • Whew, lot of questions! I flew three times with LO at 4 months. First, yes you can take pumped milk. Yes you have to go through the metal detector, and it should be fine for baby. You do not have to go through the scanner, insist on a pat down instead, because those could harm baby. Nurse or feed during take off and landing, definitely worked for us. Can't speak to the sling because G had her own seat and slept in her car seat the whole time. Things you should take: disposable changing pads!

  • I just flew with 4 month old from Florida to California!  Layover in TX.  It really worked out for us.  We requested seats in the back- one flight we were by the flight attendent station to not be next to anyone) with the noise in the back she slept like, well, a baby! Dr told us to really make sure to have her sucking something on the way down, so I always made sure she had a pacifier since she was always sleeping. I did get the Tiny Love Mobile that fits on her carrier (we bought her a seat which was worth millions of dollars!) and it seemed to help a lot when she woke up and during layovers.  I agree with PP on having disposable changing pads!  Those bathrooms are TINY so I would check out your airlines website and see if they have changing tables in lavatory's.  DH did carry her for a bit when she got a little fussy in the Ergo carrier- but we were on American and the isles were SO SMALL he couldn't fit.  You cannot have her in that during take off or landing.  I would try to keep her up before flight so she sleeps well and if you have any layovers, play with her a lot to get her tired.  PP was correct, you can deny the scan and have them do a pat down.  One thing I did was when I sat down in plane seat, I immediately put a diaper and wipes in the pocket in front of me to be accesible in case of emergency!  Make sure you check stroller at gate when you get there- they iwll have to give you something to put on it.  I'm trying to thing of anything else, I will post again if I think of anything!  GL!  And it was SOOO much easier than I thought!!!

  • Thanks so much for your comments! It's going to be a relatively short flight (including layover) - and I know it will be SO worth it to fly instead of drive the TEN hours! But, seriously, I'm super nervous. I will definitely pack the disposable changing pads and ask for seats in the back!
