do you ever order kids meals for you?

If so, do you feel bad about it? We went to Souplantation express today (for the first time). DD wanted a small chicken noodle soup and I ordered DS a kids meal which includes a salad with 5 toppings (whatever you want), a side of mac&cheese, a side of chicken (the kind you'd put on a salad), a drink and a cookie.

JEEZUS, I'm trying to eat sort of healthy so I just didn't order anything for myself and we still had a ton of food leftover. I also ordered a drink for myself. The whole thing came to $10.

I picked off their food and we all had plenty to eat. I felt a little weird doing that but it is insane the portion size they give at these places. And I will eat it if it's in front of me so I have to just not have it in front of me. I just sort of felt like the person that orders one buffet and everyone eats off of it though (I think because Souplantation is usually a buffet but the 'express' is apparently not) especially because it was so cheap.

  • I always order a Big Kids Meal at McD's. Most sit down places have age limits, but I really don't need the giant portions that come with adult meals.

  • Yup, just did it last night at Georgie Porgies (as did DH), lol!  Sometimes I will actually split a kids meal with our 2 year old.  It's plenty of food!   I am going to do it again tonight at Culver's when my SIL and I go to dinner there!  It's a good deal for people who don't need a lot of food and are trying to be budget conscious (which with 4 kids is ALL THE TIME for us!), IMO.  There is no age limit for kids meals at the places I get them, so I have no guilt.  Now, to go to a restaurant and try to order off of the kids' menu when it says "for ages 12 and under"...that's where I draw the line!

  • All the time. Or, I'll split a meal; usually full-size adult meals are way, way too much food. I don't feel bad about it one bit; restaurants need to stop the super sizing ridic portions. Last week I split a BK big kids meal w/ DD. She ate 2 of the chix nuggets. I ate 4 and some of the fries. I was hungry 2 hours later, so I had a snack.

Don't get me wrong Jodi, I can eat with the best of them. But my kids NEVER finish anything we order for them. If I ate all the food they had leftover, it totally is a full meal for me. And I am trying to do a little better than I have been. AND I ran today so I didn't want that to go to waste.

  • No.  I do buy school lunches, but they charge way more for adults because we are not subsidized by the gov't.  Also at a wedding there was a kids' table and I ate from it.  Mac n cheese and tater tots.
  • My kids always want chicken strips, so I will usually order an adult basket of chicken strips and a small side salad for us all to share.  I cut up some of the chicken to put on the salad for me.

I know -- I get it!  I was just being silly. :)  And awesome job on the running!!  (And portion control!)  :)

  • All the time!  I often eat at the Nordstrom Cafe, which has a really yummy kids menu with things that aren't offered on the adult menu.  One thing I love to get is a cheese and cracker platter.  It comes with 3 different types of cheese, lots of crackers, strawberries and grapes.  It goes great with a glass of wine, Stick out tongue.  I never used to order off the kids menu unless DD was with me, but one day I was by myself and asked if it was OK and they said yes since they still make money off of it.

Thanks Jodi! I'm trying! After doing a juice cleanse for three days that was literally the worst three days of my life, I decided I just need to try and be a little smarter about my choices + add very regular exercise and live with whatever size that leaves me at. :)

I love food too much to deprive myself completely and to fight with it all my life AND I would ultimately fail if I did this anyway. BUT I don't need to eat the whole pizza, for example, anymore ;).

Ah yes, such a HEALTHY mentality you have adopted.  I'm trying to remind myself of the same -- when an extremist though, it's hard!  But we can do it!  Right?  Say right, please.  Please say right!  Ok, good!  LOL

    RIGHT!!!!

Jodi, I'm right there with you with the extremes. I have to (or hopefully I can say 'used to have to') start any sort of diet or exercise regime on a monday or the first of the month. Why? Because I could keep saying "oh I'll start Monday". And then when Monday came and went and I didn't do anything, I could say "oh guess I'll start next Monday". And if I screwed up and ate something "bad", I would binge and say "well, today's already ruined so might as well keep eating!" It's ridiculous.

I'm finding that when I run though I don't WANT to eat like complete crap so I'm hoping as I continue running my eating habits will continue to improve some too. But I know I will never be someone who eats super healthy and I think I'd rather accept that than fight it and be miserable.

  • I don't.  Mostly because most of the restaurants here are not chain (at least in the area I live in).  Many specifically say the meals are for kids only.  Most of the "fast food" McDonald's and the like have cheaper options on the $1ish menus than getting a happy meal.   I do often order an app instead of a meal though.

I'm pretty serious about Culver's, so I'd get the big person food there. We don't have them where I live, so when I get the opportunity, I do it up right! :)

I don't usually do it when we go to a regular restaurant, but I'll order a meal for me and split it with my 1 year old (who eats more than my 5 year old). That way we both have plenty to eat and I'm not overeating. I usually get kids meals when I do the drive-thru, though. If you give me a pound of fries, I'll eat a pound of fries.

She's crafty - and she's just my type.
  • Yup...at fast food.  Happy Meal is perfect for me!

Sit downs I don't usually because most have an age limit listed.

Although I do love Bertucchis version of a grilled cheese!! YUMMM!

  • Not really.....I've never been anywhere that offered something more tempting than the regular menu. It's always just mac and cheese, hot dog, grilled cheese, etc.

We rarely order anything for DS off the kids menu though - he eats off our plates (mostly mine). He is a great eater and not picky, so he'll split my plate and then get a few bites of whatever DH is having too. The only time we order something just for him if I'm eating something I know he won't eat (like a Ceasar salad).

Although the cheese/cracker/fruit kids plate mentioned by a PP above sounds like a pretty awesome meal!

  • I never did before, but after my surgery I almost always either order a kid's meal or share my meal with DD and still take some home.  I can only eat 1/2 cup of food, so it's ridiculous to order a big meal for myself.
