Video Monitor

Have any of you used a video monitor?  Which one is recommended?

Re: Video Monitor

  • We have a Summers Infant Best View, and it's been great--they no longer make our model, though.  But I would recommend the SI brand in general, b/c their customer service is great.  IDK about the longevity of other video monitors, but we use our monitor overnight, obviously, and then an additional 2-3 hours a day right now, so we have put a lot of miles on them.  Our first one died just before the 1-yr mark, and they replaced it no questions asked with a brand new one.  That was about 14 months ago, and we just started having minor trouble with ours--it started cutting out sound, and I called and even though it was out of warranty they again replaced it.  If you plan to use it a lot, I'd just make sure to keep the box so that if you do have trouble, you can give them a call and get a new one.  But otherwise we've been extremely happy.

  • we also have the summer brand and we are very happy with it. we no longer use it overnight (DS is plenty loud for us if he is up!) but use it during naptime daily. the only thing we had to replace was the power cord which was a $20 item. We plan to order a second camera for the baby's room.

A friend has the newer summer model and it's pretty cool with a zoom in capability. I recommend.

  • We weren't going to buy one but a friend gifted us hers since she no longer needs it.  I've heard from quite a few friends with kids that they liked the video monitor a lot  more than just the audio monitor esp at night.  They'd check the video if they heard noise and if baby wasn't stirring they'd go back to sleep.   I don't know the brand of the one she gave us though.  Sorry!

  • We had the summer day and night one for DD (well, we still have it).  After almost 2 years, the sound started getting really crackly and static-y.  We did replace the power cord (power surge) and battery once, but they were inexpensive and actually enhanced the video quality.  We still use it (video only) for DD overnight to make sure she is staying in her big girl bed, but I just bought the Summer Slim and Secure yesterday after hearing good things from my SIL.

I DEFINITELY recommend video over audio only.  You save yourself from having to needlessly get out of bed to check on baby and potentially disturb/wake baby by opening the nursery door to check.
