Question for 2nd time mom's

How soon after delivery did you feel up to having visitors at your home? The reason I ask is because my in laws want to come and see us when we get home from the hospital. They want to come down as soon as possible but they are not willing to visit in the hospital. The reason being, it might interfere with one of there daughters softball games. Tongue Tied My MIL takes a lot of energy to be around because she is very loud and demanding.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: Question for 2nd time mom's

  • Honestly, my sister and her family came over about an hour after we got home from the hospital. With that being said, I am very close to my sister. Plus she went and got all the things that you need after you have a baby(tucks pads, colace, pads) since she knew exactly what to get.

Now, my MIL, I did not want over right away. Luckily she lives 3 hours away and has a school age child still so she wasn't able to come until that next weekend(we were home on a Monday from the hospital).

  • I would say a few days. Once you're home and settled after about 3 days would be fine. Pretty much anytime in the first few weeks is overwhelming because you're so tired and adjusting to being a mommy, but after a few days should be fine.

  • I honestly think it depends on how long they plan to be there.  A one hour visit is quite different from a six hour visit.

I was up for very short visits from friends a few days after birth.  But, they were all less than 30 min long.  Those are tolerable and enjoyable.

A six hour visit, or an overnight visit from in laws that are overbearing?  Uh, never???  Or at least wait a few weeks.

  • Visiting for a couple hours 2-3 days. Visiting and staying at your house and they are difficult non helpful people... i'd say atleast a week. If MiL is going to come and help clean, cook dinners, and be helpful then within a couple days.

  • For us, no one came over unless they were willing to help out. That being said, my mom, sister, brother, dad, and MIL all came over at one point or another during the first six weeks. My best friend came over too and stayed with us for about a week to help out. Everyone else waited until about 6 weeks or so to come over and see us.

P.S. I did have a C-section and postpartum depression so I really couldn't handle having people over until then.
