Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If you bathe with baby...

Do you have any special "equipment" or do anything special safety-wise? I would like to try it, since DS hates his tub, but I feel a little uneasy about it (hard tub, slippery baby...) DH usually works too late to be home to assist, gets home just in time for bedtime routine.

I am thinking maybe a towel on the bottom of the tub? I would love not to buy anything else...

Or would/do you not bathe together alone?

  • No special equipment. I just put his bouncer next to the tub with a towel lining it. I get in and wash then grab him and do the same. I use a platic cup to rise and put him in the bouncer wrapped up in a towel while I get out. He loves to take baths and doesn't like to get out.

  • My son was a very big baby, and grew out of his tub way before he was able to sit up on his own, so I ended up having to bathe with him.  Luckily I had the non-slip things on the bottom of my tub, so I didn't have to do anything special.  I just sat him in my lap with his back to my chest and cleaned him that way.  If you want, they sell the non-slip thingies that have adhesive, so you just stick them on the bottom and you are ready to go.

  • No special props needed here, besides the usual stuff (washcloths, soap, and towel).

I never do it without DH in the bathroom. I usually get in the tub and get comfortable while DH undresses him, cleans his bottom, etc, and then hands him to me. Then when I am done, I hand him back to DH who gets him all dried off and dressed for bed while I get out and get dressed myself.  Not sure I would try all of that on my own.  Maybe you could do baths with baby on the nights DH can be home?

  • I bathe baby without any extra equipment and he LOVES it.  I like making him "swim" in the water when he kicks his legs I move him through the water and he has so much fun.  Just be very careful getting out of the tub with LO.  Enjoy, one of the favorite parts of my day!
  • No special equipment, just a word of advice: Never get in or out of the tub with LO.

Not only do I bathe with him without DH home, I bathe with him AND the two year old.  Yeah, that's one full tub.  Agree with pp - don't get in and out with him.  I have the bouncer or a towel folded over several times right next to the tub.  He sits there until I'm ready for him, I get him all clean, and then I pop him back down, get myself out, and DS#1 stays and plays for a while longer while DS#2 and I get dressed.

  • I often bath with all three (it starts as me and Ali but then the older two spaz out and climb in). I reach out and place him on his towel, cover him and then get out myself.

  • Thanks all! I feel a bit better about it... I think I will still lay a towel in the tub the first time to feel a bit better about it.

  • I'm so glad I read this post!  I don't know why I didn't think of the towel and bouncer, I will be doing that from now on!
  • just be careful of the "bubbles" with baby...I thought it was really funny until I realized poop was floating in my tub:(
  • You just have me thinking.....

    Eww.....

ha ha - I love the "idea" of bathing with LO - and it has crossed my mind on several occasions... but I can't get past the thought that she may pee in the water while we are bathing... and that would get either of us very clean.... LOL
