2nd Trimester

anyone else's hair falling out??

My hair has been falling out....way more than normal for about the past month. I can compare it to the normal post pardom hair loss that most go through AFTER they have their babies. I am taking prenatal vitamins and it is not my thyroid. Anyone else experiencing higher than normal hair loss??

  • I seem to be shedding at the same rate as normal (which is a lot, I have a ton of hair). I kind of freaked out when I realized this but I think/hope it's ok.

  • I don't have this problem, my hair actually feels fuller, but my SIL had a ton of hair loss with her pregnancy and it's actually noticably thinner. Although she did have a huge head of hair to begin with so I think now she's just average.

I've heard hair loss can be normal for a lot of women. You are taking prenatals, right? The biotin in them helps with hair and nail growth. Maybe buy a separate bottle of just biotin to see if that helps.

  • thanks ladies. I might buy some biotin and give that a try. Did your sister by chance have a baby girl. I was reading old wives tales today and it said the hair loss could mean a girl.....lol.

  • My hair has always shed lots, and I hoped it would stop in pregnancy- it hasn't- at all, whatsoever. My cousin said hers stopped shedding in her last trimester.

  • Mine is. It is driving me crazy since I had just gotten over my post partum hair loss with my daughter. I have been taking my vitamins and my doctor tested my thyroid, so I am not sure what it is. It never happened in either of my previous pregnancies.
  • i've done many many pregnant women's hair over the years, and what i've noticed is that your hair will get longer faster. the longer your hair gets, the more noticeable it is when it sheds. the average person will lose 200-250 hairs per day. don't stress about it.

if it feels thinner than usual, go to your hairdresser and get a trim. this will knock off the "stringy" dead ends and help it feel fuller (even if it's 1/2 inch trim). while your there, ask her if she notices any "bald spots" dime size or bigger. that would be alopecia, a definite sign of stress.

  • Your hair either falls out during or after pregnancy.  It's actually better if it falls out during as those that get thicker hair during pregnancy usually tend to lose it in clumps afterwards.

  • Mine has slowed down but fell out in clumps in the first trimester. It also happened when I was pg with my son. It also fell out postpartum too which really sucked. My OB said some women have it happen and it's nothing to be concerned about.

  • I have been shedding more than usual I just thought it might be stress but after reading this I am glad I am not alone.
