I have a Mazda CX-7 and LOVE it but there is no way I will be able to fit 3 car seats in the back. The middle seat is tiny. I hate minivans! Suggestions on something that can accommodate 3-4 kids that isn't HUGE & difficult to park?!
I've been thinking about this myself lately. Obviously we don't need a bigger car yet, but do you think it'd be easier to have 3 across or one in a back row? This is what I was debating while I should have been sleeping last night lol
I have a Chevy Equinox and it is equipped with latch hookups in all three seats. I think you should be able to fit three carseats. I love how roomy it is. Even with DS rear facing in his convertible or when he was in his infant seat, they didn't even touch either of the front seats. It also has a decent amount of cargo space. I really like it.
I'm in the same boat as you, although I'll probably go the minivan route simply bc it is more economical. I'm so tired of people parking so close to my small suv and me not being able to get the kids in and out. The sliding doors on a minivan are what is going to push me that way. I always said I would never have a minivan, let alone before I'm 30, but it looks like that may be the way we are going.
have you checked out the Combi Coccoro? You can fit three of them in the back seat of a compact car, I still need a van, but you might be able to get a way with the car you have!
The sunshine radian is a really narrow, lightweight carseat. You might be able to get 3 of those across your backseat, or 2 plus an infant seat.
While I agree that it is narrow, there is NOTHING lightweight about this seat! LOL That said, we do have three of them, and they fit in my Saturn Vue well. We had them all across the back with two rear-facing. I would think anything with a third row that is not a van would be a major PITA.
So, the SSK Radians are not cheap, but they are cheaper than a new car, and last from 5 lbs to 80 lbs, so they are a great investment, and fitting 3 across is a plus.
i never thought of a new car seat! DD#1 is in the safety 1st air forward facing and DD#2 is in the chicco keyfit. I figured #2 will be 15mo by the time #3 comes so I would have DD#2 in the same toddler seat as DD#1 and then reuse the infant seat again.
I'll research different car seats before a new car we do eventually want 4 kids so I will have to up-size eventually.
We'll probably getting Radian car seats. I would love a bigger car, but it's just not an option right now. I'm going to try to figure out a way for my current car seats to work (2 Britax Marathons and a Graco Snugride) to work so I can put off buying the new seats for a while, too!

You could fit 3-4 carseats in there. There is a standard third row that folds up and down. We have friends with 3 kids and they seem to make it work pretty well. The oldest is in the third row (and they keep only one side of that bench up) and the two smaller kids are in the back seat. The older one gets in through the trunk (access to the backseat is a little hard from the side doors when there are carseats on both sides).
As much as I LOVE my Pilot and feel it works great for 2 kids, I would probably bite the bullet and buy a minivan if we decided to have 3+. Minivans aren't cool, but they sure are convenient! Plus, they are easy to park and good on gas.
I think it would be pretty darn tough to find a non mini-van that is big enough in a convenient way for 3+ carseats and is a breeze to park. haha.
ETA: You could fit three across on the Pilot but it would be tough to get that kiddo in the middle seat in and secured. I already have running boards and I'm still not sure i could reach a carseat in the middle position having to reach over another seat....

i drive a Jeep Commander. i could easily fit 4+ carseats in it- but it'd be a PITA to get the kids into the 3rd row.
if/when we have a 3rd- i'm probably going to suck it up & get a minivan. i said i never would but let's be real- while they're in carseats it'll be a lot easier.

See, I've never actually lifted that seat before, but I knew it had a strap so you could wear it so I thought it was lightweight. We're getting that for our convertible seat for DD. I'm just waiting for it to go on sale!
