Thumb Sucking

Sully is apparently trying to learn to suck his thumb. This usually means he wakes himself up, frantically sucking on his palm or the back of his hand. If he gets a thumb, or even some fingers, he gets so excited that he loses them. Please tell me other LOs are doing this or even better, that he will eventually get it right, because honestly the million nightwakings as he "yells" at his hand are getting kinda old...

Re: Thumb Sucking

  • I'm more of a lurker on here...but am on at least 15 times a day. I should really post more. I had to respond because my little one, Kinley, does the exact same thing and it's maddening! You made me LOL when you said Sully yells at his hand, because that's exactly what I think they're doing. Kinley has only gotten her thumb a time or two, and she doesn't know how to keep it in there. It's smaller than a paci so I don't think she knows what it is. But she will suck on part of her hand until she leaves a red spot. We swaddle her for this sole reason, and without a doubt, if she wakes herself in the middle of the night, it's because she got her fist out of the swaddle. Otherwise she'll sleep 11+ hours. I'm hoping she finds her thumb or gives it up soon...but that's wishful thinking :)

  • Just recently he started yelling at his hands when his thumbs falls out. I've woken up so many times the past 2 nights thinking he was hungry only to find him fast asleep trying to find his thumb.

  • DS has been sucking on his thumb for about 3 weeks now, so yes it will get better.  IKWYM though he would wake up in the middle of the night and just let out this noise until he found it again.  It started with him just finding something, the back of his hand, random fingers and sometimes his thumb, but now it is consistently his thumb but only when he is in his crib. He can't find it unless he is laying down, because then it is practically right in front of his face.

  • DS was a paci man and I made him that way, would take the fingers out and give him a paci, and now DD is on pacis. she hasn;t really found her thumb yet or fingers so that is fine by me. I think its easier to break a paci sucker then a thumb sucker,

This is my thought too. DS is interested in getting his thumb in there, but he doesnt' do so well. When he gets frustrated, I give him a paci. I figure I can take a paci away - but not a thumb!

I wished this worked with my DS.  When I see him sucking on his fingers/fist I try to give him the paci but he just spits it out and goes back jamming his fist into his mouth.

  • My DD started sucking on her fist a few weeks ago.  She loves the paci but sometimes if it falls out of her mouth she's content with her fist for a while.  Usually she can't get her fingers (she actually just had her thumb for the first time today).  I swaddle her at night so she couldn't suck on her thumb even if she wanted to.

  • Yep, Mina does this too. In fact, instances of "yelling" have increased generally... she yells at the floor during tummy time, her fists while trying to suck on them, and my boob if she isn't staying latched well enough.

Her dad and all of his siblings were crazy thumbsuckers (like, till 4 or 5 and drove my poor MIL crazy) ...so I'm not encouraging it, but I don't have much hope of stopping it.
