sippy/straw/cup/bottle weaning question

Since M was about 7 months we have let her mess around with a sippy cup. Now that she is 12 months we are trying to wean her off the bottle. (Doesn't help that she is sick this week..)

How did you get your LO weaned off the bottle? I feel like she should be better at this by now. Her pedi said as long as she was off by 15 months, but she doesn't seem to be any better with sippys/straw cups than when she was 7 months old....

She kinda gets the sippy - but usually throws it and whatever she gets out of it runs down her face.

We tried the straw kind and she is more interested in chewing on the straw - and I don't think she understands she needs to suck on it.

Last weekend she seemed REALLY interested in my cup, so I let her have a little sip of my water and she freaked out (in a good way) and wanted more.  She drank almost half of my cup of water - while I tilt and held the cup for her - with no spills.

Any advice on what we can do to help her ditch the bottle?

  • We just had to go cold turkey.  He had no real interest in the sippy (or skill) until we only offered the sippy, and then within a couple of weeks he was a pro.  Sucking stuff out and letting it run down her chin is a phase they all seem to go through, thankfully it was a brief phase for us.

as this happened were you worried that he wasn't getting the "proper" amount of milk and other fluids throughout the day?

No, if she is really thirsty, she'll get motivated to get the milk.  A few days where she isn't getting the full amount isn't going to make a big impact on her.

  • This is on my to do list as well. D drinks water pretty well out of the sippy, but chews on it when bored and makes a mess. I've been putting off switching the milk over to the sippy, but it just hasn't been something that I thought about till now as we get ready for our 1yr well check next week. Our pedi wanted her to be switched over by 1yr. whoops. I've been told cold turkey as well, so I might just bite the bullet this weekend. I'm SOOOOO sick of washing bottles anyway.
  • Any recs on the Playtex Coolster Tumblers?
