DIY felt-flannel board questions

I want to make a felt board for DS with an old picture frame. I was looking online at how to do this and I guess it is flannel that you buy for the actual board. I wast thinking felt but I guess felt is just what the shapes are made from that you put on the board.

Has anyone made one and have any recs on where to buy felt or what type?

I have this bookmark saved for a felt dress up board, and the background is felt.

Hancock Fabrics and JoAnns both have pretty good selections of felt on bolts so they're much larger pieces that can be cut to length.
