2 month old sleeping on belly

I have tried to put my 2 month old daughter to sleep on her back in her crib but all she does is cry, I flip her over to her belly and she goes right to sleep.  She can lift her head and move it around well so I am not worried about her suffocating, but my doctor tells me to put her on her back or risk of SIDS.  I have tried having her fall asleep in my arms then put her in her crib, but she wakes up and cries.  Anybody else having this problem and or any ideas??

  • Follow YOUR motherly instinct and consider the advice of your PCP.

I slept both my babies on their bellies. My kid's PCP also strongly recommended they sleep on their backs. But that did not work for my children, they were just like your baby. CRIED on their backs, slept 20 minute stretches. On their bellies they slept 3-4 hour stretches as newborns. They were more happy and so was I.

Your baby is your baby. Do what you think is right for her and you.

I also never had to worry about flat heads. To each is their own I guess. (obviously I would take a flat head over SIDS...but like I said, back sleeping wasn't an option for us and both my kids are happy and thriving)

  • my lo has reflux really bad and we can't even have him sleep in his crib yet. he sleeps in his swing or bouncy chair. if you're that concerned try going that route.
  • My baby is 6 weeks old. She slept on my chest for her first 4 weeks home. She would wake up almost immediately if we put her in her crib on her back- even when swaddled. She slept on her stomach on my chest so once I knew she could lift her head and move it, I put her belly down in her crib. She's been sleeping so much better on her belly. 1.5-4 hours for naps and 5-7 hours at night. Her crib is in our room, so I'm able to hear her constantly and check on her frequently. I'm not any more worried about SIDS than I was when I was putting her on her back.

  • My little guy is 8 weeks old. We switched to tummy sleeping probably 4 weeks ago. He was waking up 4+ times a night on his back, and then when we switched, he would only wake up once a night. I was so worried about him, it was hard for me to sleep at first, but he really seems so much happier. We've done as much as we can to reduce other risk factors. His pedi isn't thrilled about it, but he recommended that we do what's best for our family and makes the baby happy.

I've heard other bumpies say they got the Angelcare monitor for a tummy sleeping baby and that helped them feel better about it.

  • do what is best for you and LO. our pedi said that if we continue to put our LO on her belly to sleep that there needs to be nothing else in her crib...there's a gloworm and her breathable bumpers. she only gets 1 blanket. our LO has been sleeping on her belly since birth pretty much. she's been sleeping through the night since 6 weeks. the way i see it is my mom put me and my brother on our bellies, we're fine, and so did DH's family [all belly sleepers]. There is no conclusive reason for SIDS, but it's still scary...just do what feels right to you!

  • We have been sleeping our daughter on her belly since birth, she is just over 2 weeks old now.  I've tried so hard to get her to sleep on her back but she will sleep 1/2 hour max and wakes up really mad.  On her stomach she will sleep for 2-3 hours.  I tried sleeping her in the swing and even bought the fisher-price rock and play sleeper thinking that might help.  But, she only likes sleeping on her belly.  She is a very strong baby, she's been lifting and moving her head around since birth, which makes me feel a little better but I still feel bad about sleeping her on her stomach.
