I am brainstorming ideas for summer activities. I haven't been to MV in many years...is it an okay place for a toddler, especially if you stick to mostly the outdoor stuff?
We took C last November, before he was fully walking yet, and he did great. To be honest, it might have been a bit easier to corral him since DH and I pretty much had to hold him the entire time we were in the house, but if your kiddo is okay holding hands he should be fine. We used a stroller for most of the outdoor stuff and that was easy peasy.
I think it is great for toddlers- especially the outdoor stuff. DD loved the animals and just playing in the gardens, walking on the paths and running around on the big lawn.

This exactly - we bought year long memberships because DD had so much fun there.
I think it would be great - as long as the weather's nice, plenty of running around and exploring can be done. My kids would love the animals.
However, we took DD to the John Adams house when she was about 14 months (we'd just moved to Boston and wanted to do tourist stuff), and the tour through the residence was a disaster. She was just making happy sounds and babbles, but we got enough dirty looks that we had to abandon ship - and couldn't get our money back So if you want to tour the inside stuff, where you have to stand in each room for a while and listen to guides and such, prepare for him to get antsy (and see if you can get a refund if needed...).
I actually worked at Mount Vernon for a summer and I think it is great for kids. As others have said, it can be difficult in indoor areas because strollers are prohibited and, of course, there are lots of things that are "no touch." However, in the new-ish museum, there is a specific children's area with activities and lots of "touch" experiences. You should check their website to see when they offer specific programs that might interest the little one.
Also, down by the water, there is the pioneer farm where the majority of the animals are and there are demonstrations on a routine basis. When I was working there (in archaeology), we'd often go down to use the restrooms by the pioneer farm and I loved walking by and petting the sheep on my way to use the loo!
