Gift Ideas

DH's BFF and his GF are moving to Michegan soon.  We're close to them both and we'd like to get them some sort of going away present but I have no idea what to get.  I was thinking some sort of Texas related home decor (Their apartment isn't rustic or anything, just sort of a mish mash of lots of stuff but I thought it would be a nice reminder of home.)  I just don't know what to get them - it doesn't have to be that idea.  He went to UT and is from Austin.  She is from Michegan.  I don't really want to order anything b/c their going away party is Saturday and I'd like to take it then.

Any ideas?  Bonus points if you can tell me where to find it.

Re: Gift Ideas

  • I totally want one of these now that we're not in TX anymore, just because they're fun.

I think Wilton Armetale (sp?) has some nice Texas-themed pewter trays and decorative items that are sold at Macy's that would be a good reminder of their time in Austin.

  • What about a bottle of bbq sauce from Rudy's or somewhere else specific to Texas/Austin?

That is AWESOME!  I'm totally buying one!

You know what I can't find anywhere here?  Chicken taco seasoning.  I check in every grocery store I set foot into, and no dice.  That and green enchilada sauce.  So, maybe a gift basket with "staples" like these that they can use in the kitchen, and some other decorative Texan things - I think the dish idea is good!  I know both Barton Creek mall and shops on SoCo have a lot of decorative "Texas" stuff, like dishes, towels, decor, art of the Capitol or Tower at UT.

I remember someone ordered some prints of Barton Springs and other places that were old school way back when.. but yeah, ordering would take too long.

  • We made some friends an Austin/Texas themed basket when they moved out of state.  It had some things like Lammies candies, Keep Austin Weird t-shirts, blue bonnet seeds, some UT tumblers, etc.  One thing that my friend brought that I thought was a good idea was one of those metal Texas stars you can hang either inside or outside your house.  Not sure where she got it though...(sorry).

Yeah - this is a good idea, too.  It's hard to find any good salsa up here, so if there's some authentic jarred salsa that you can throw in that basket, that would be awesome.  (It's hard to find Rotel up here!  And, IMO, Chi Chi's brand salsa is NOT salsa.)

I think you are talking about the prints that have to be ordered from the Austin Historical Society.  I ordered some for DH when he graduated from UT.  I think they only took about a week to come in but I don't remember for sure.
