New here and a question

I am currently pregnant with twins, I was having a complication free pregnancy until I was in a head on collision when I was 23 weeks 5 days pregnant. Both babies waters broke and 1 placenta tore. It seems the tear has healed itself. I am on hospiutal bed rest until delivery of the twins. They are trying to keep them in until 34 weeks. On average how long did your baby stay in the hospital when born at 34 weeks. I know all babies are different but I was just wondering

Oh my goodness! I'm sorry that you are going through this. I have a 25 weeker so I can't speak too much about at 34 weekers but I do know that they generally have pretty short NICU stays and do very well. I hope that you are able to keep those babies cooking for many more weeks!

Oh no! That's awful...if you don't mind my asking: if your water broke, how can they still be in you? Curious because as I was in labor they told me that my water had broken and once that happens there's no turning back. ...but then again I was also in full labor.

Anyway, they will probably tell you to think in terms of due date...everyone's situation is different, as you said you know already :) I like the due-date way of thinking. DS is 35 weeks, 1 day (gestational) and 4 weeks, 2 days old today...rumor has it that he'll be out in about a week, but that all depends. DH and I look at it as - if we get him home before the DD it's bonus :)

Oh my gosh! I'm so sorry to hear this. How horrible for you. Your in the best place for those baby. I know bedrest is hard, but stay strong. My DD was born at 33w 4d  due to pre-e and she was in the NICU for 12 days. She was mainly a feeder/grower after day 5. Praying that you can keep those LO's baking for as long as possible.

Both waters broke but I was not in labor, the waters broke due to impact from the accident so  as long as I don't get an infection, start contracting or babies don't show distress they will stay in until 34 weeks

So sorry you are going through this - Thank God you and the babies are doing ok now.  Typically the longer they stay in you the shorter they stay in NICU.  34 weeks is when the suck/swallow reflex can begin to kick in.  They say between 34-36 weeks babies learn to suck and swallow, until they learn that, they are on a feeding tube.  My DS was born at 32 weeks and stayed in the hospital for 23 very long days.  Before babies can go home they have to be able to be able to stay warm enough dressed in clothes that they aren't burning more calories trying to stay warm than they are taking in.  Eating is hard work for the babies at the beginning, so they have to be able to eat efficiently enough to not burn more calories than they are taking in.  Typically before the babies go home they have to be able to sit up in their carseat for 90 minutes without getting too stressed or their oxygen saturation dropping too low.  The babies need to be gaining weight steadily before they can go home.  When I went to the hospital with contractions, they gave me a steroid shot to help his lungs just in case he was born.  I was only able to get one shot before he was born - which was about 24 hours later.  They said the shot really helped him and if he had had two shots, he would have been in really great shape.  He had to be intubated for about the first 12 hours or so after he was born, then he had a C-PAP for a day, then a nasal canula for three days.  After that, he was breathing regular room air on his own.  We wouldn't have stayed in the nicu that long, but he had a moderate size PDA, so he wound up getting some fluid in his lungs and we had to get that taken care of and it caused him to regress a bit.  He recovered from all of that very quickly.  He was 4lbs and 10 oz when we brought him home, and now at 16 weeks he weighs 12 lbs and 12 oz!  I wish you and the babies the very best - keep us posted!

Wow...you've been through a lot.  I hope those babies stay in a long time.  I've had a few preemies, so I'll give you an idea of how early, how long they stayed:

    DS1 born at 33 weeks (5lbs5oz) - 4 weeks

    DS2 born at 31 weeks (3lbs 14oz) 5 weeks

    DS3 FULL TERM!!!!

    DS4 born at 27w 3 d (water broke at 27w) 2lbs 5oz - 62 days

    All the best!

Kendall was born at 33 weeks exactly, due to severe Pre-E and IUGR.  She stayed for 32 days and was sent home on oxygen.  Her biggest hurdle was the oxygen but that is due to our elevation and lack of oxygen in the air.

At Birth she weighed 3 lbs 4 oz.  At discharge she was 5 lbs 7 oz.

34 weeks is probably minimal NICU stay.  I've known 35 weekers who were able to go straight home.  DS was born at 32 weeks and spent 3 weeks in the NICU, so basically went home at 35 weeks gestation.  At that point they'll probably just be feeders/growers and hopefully won't have any issues.

So sorry to hear what happened but I'm glad things seem to be going ok!

Oh my! So sorry to hear about your accident! How scary that must have been! Im glad to hear that you and the babies are okay. My LO, Iris was born at 34 weeks this January. She weighed 5lbs 6oz and stayed in the NICU for 11 days. She had very little hurdles to overcome after birth and was surprisingly healthy and big for her age. She had to "feed and grow" and also had to overcome a small bit of jaundice. Twins seem to be a little smaller and may need a little more time to "feed and grow". The twins that were born the day after Iris at 35 weeks were both around 4lbs 4oz and were still in the NICU when we left on their 10th day. They were close to leaving though, and both doing very well, just feeding and growing bigger everyday!! Best of luck, and can I ask you why you are so sure youll go early?

They won't let me go past 34 weeks because the risk of infection is too high
