dressing LO for warmer weather

Now that we're starting to see the light at the end of the wintery tunnel here in NY, I'm unsure how to dress DD.  I was taught to dress babies in one more layer than I'm wearing.  Until now, I've been putting her in an undershirt (short sleeve if it's in the 50s or above, long sleeve if colder), a long sleeve shirt, pants and socks.  Or if she's wearing a dress, then a long sleeve undershirt and pants under it.  And when we go out I put a hoodie or sweater on top.

So now that it's going to be 80 today, I have no idea how to dress her!  Long sleeve shirt, no undershirt?  Short sleeve shirt over short sleeve undershirt?  Does she need a cardigan?  I'm heading to the park with some friends and their babies this afternoon so we'll be out in the sun (covered in sunscreen and a sun hat, of course).   So how do those of you in warmer climates dress your LOs?

Re: dressing LO for warmer weather

  • OMG i could have written this! I'm in NJ and it's going to be 85 today. I was going to ask the Dr but I forgot at the last appt. My line of thought was the "one layer" rule was for newborns...and b/c we had our LOs in the winter. My mom says "if mom is comfortable, then baby is comfortable". Yesterday I had LO in a romper with short sleeves and no socks. She was actually crying a lot during the day b/c she was hot. So she ended up napping in just her dipey. Today I am putting her in a little dress. It has short sleevesand I am going to leave her socks off.  I really think she will be fine. And of course I will have "just in case" clothing with me. but i am fine right now in shorts and a tank top myself.

I know I am glad to not have to scrounge for coordinating pants for once!!!

  • It's 80ish here, too. I just put her in a short sleeve undershirt onesie, with a sleeveless, dress-onesie thing from carters, with a light pair of socks, no pants.
  • I keep socks on my LO almost constantly (he has cold feet like his daddy) but shorts and short sleeve onesies is his usual attire usually 75 and bellow he'll have pants on instead of shorts.  But I don't look at the temp before I dress him I just go off of how it feels.  And sometimes I feel like it is a long sleeve kind of day.  I really just kind of dress him and it works out fine.

  • if it was going to be 85 id probably just have her in a romper.

rule of thumb is to dress them how you are dressed

  • I did what you did for the colder months but now that it's warm I dress him like I dress myself. Like yesterday during the day he wore a nike short sleeve shirt and shorts. I had socks on him most of the day but took them off towards the end because he seemed fussy from the heat. For bed he slept in a onsie and today he is going to wear a phillies one piece outfit,no onsie under it. I would just keep a sweater or hoodie with you just in case it gets chilly.

  • DD is wearing a one piece outfit today and its about 70* right now. I only put a onesie on her if her top is not a onesie, just a regular shirt. We still have the bundle me on the carseat so that keeps her plenty warm, but I might be taking that off at the end of the month.

  • It's been warm here for awhile now... in the mid 80's or so.  It'll be a hot summer as always... we have temps in the 100s and 90s for 3 or more months.  I put her in onesies or the onesie dresses from Carters with socks.  She gets very hot in her car seat so I'm careful about keeping her as cool as possible when we go out.

  • I live in hawaii so I'm going have to ask you how to dress my lo For cold weather. But here all she ever wears is a short sleeve or sleeveless onesie. Socks if she's inside her toes get cold
